This Nigerian debut is the heartbreaking tale of what wanting a child can do to a person, a marriage and a family.

Yejide is hoping for a miracle, for a child. It is all her husband wants, all her mother-in-law wants, and she has tried everything. But when her relatives insist upon a new wife, it is too much for Yejide to bear.

Unravelling against the social and political turbulence of 1980s Nigeria, Stay with Me is a story of the fragility of married love, the undoing of family, the power of grief, and the all-consuming bonds of motherhood. It is a tale about the desperate attempts we make to save ourselves, and those we love, from heartbreak.

Kritikerstimmen

"Scorching, gripping, ultimately lovely." (Margaret Atwood)
"This terrific first novel (shortlisted for the Baileys women's prize for fiction) deals with the daily stresses of living with the political upheavals of the time but the real drama is happening in Yejide's womb. Adebayo unfolds the many layers of truth with insight and skill." (The Times)
"A thoroughly contemporary style that is all her own...clever and funny...despite the intense sadness of her subject matter, she has produced a bright, big-hearted demonstration of female spirit, as well as the damage done by the boundlessness of male pride." (Guardian)

havent read many stories on infant or child loss so k would definitely give that as content warning before you dive in. beautifully read, loved the different perspectives. these two storylines flowed beautifully together to give us the whole picture of their relationship. an heartwrenching take on how cultural and familial traditions and expectations impact individuals and their Romantic relations. I felt for both characters more than I thought I would and could feel the love they had for each other.

tearjerker about love, lost , and family

The story touched me deeply. Psychologically clever observations give you insights to what a good relationship really needs: honesty

The story shows how pride and social restraints can destroy relationships step by step.
The story stayed exiting because it contained several unexpected surprises. There are also important feminist messages inside this book.

After some really sad parts I was happy with the bittersweet happy end.

Adjoa Andoh is an incredibly good narrator, I would always recommend you to listen to her !

Sad and perfectly told story

The story was beautifully devastating, I couldn't process the magnitude of loss iyajide faced and the ending had me in tears. I love every bit but it broke my heart

Beautifully devastating

Don't miss out on this book. Real, captivating, sad but still hilarious...Thank you for writing this book Ayobami Adebay.

Also best narrator ever! At least for narrating books with african (Nigerian) characters. I recommend listening to audio books narrated by Adjoa Andoh. I have enjoyed them all.
