They say you can't go home again...oh, if only that were true.

Thanks to a series of unfortunate events - and one backstabbing frenemy - home is exactly where I'm headed. Back to Winterspell Lake, the small community in Eastern Washington where magic runs rampant and humans are outlawed.

Faster than you can say hocus pocus I'm unpacking my bags and settling into the guest room of my parents' house, trying to ignore the creeping sensation that I'll never break free again.

The one thing Winterspell has going for it is the sweets shop in the center of town, a bakery filled with magical creations designed to enchant the taste buds and charm even the pickiest of connoisseurs. Luckily for me, I get the friends and family discount since my parents own the famous Sugar Shack. If I want room and board, I have to frost cupcakes and sling macaroons with the rest of the fam.

Unfortunately, things in Winterspell aren't all sugar cookies and rainbows. According to the local news, a dangerous sea serpent has claimed the lives of three missing girls. The journalist in me has to have a look for myself, and what I find is something far more deadly.

Something that makes me wish I'd stayed in the bakery.

Sehr schöne Serie mit sympathischen Charakteren und einer interessanten Handlung, komplette mit sämtlichen ´witch tropes´ die man von ´cozy witch mystery´ erwartet.
Hin und wieder ein bischen zu vorhersehbar und offensichtlich von Bewitched, Practical Magic, Harry Potter, a A Discovery of Witches und noch einigen anderen Werken inspiriert, aber es ist auch einfach unmöglich bei der Fülle von Neuerscheinungen im Bereich Fantasy/Hexe etwas wirklich komplett Neues zu schreiben.
Insgesamt fühle ich mich hervorragend unterhalten und freue mich auf den Rest der Serie.
Jetzt speziell zum Audiobook: Die Sprecherin ist meiner Meinung nach schwierig- die Technik ist sauber, Intonation, Tempo und das Herausarbeiten der verschiedenen Stimmen sind gelungen aber die Stimme ist extrem ´high pitched´, an manchen Stellen so schrill, dass es mir in den Ohren weh tut (VÖLLIG unmöglich mit Kopfhörern) und ich empfinde sie als sehr unangenehm, werde die anderen Bände wohl lesen anstatt sie zu hören.

Ella was cheated out of her promotion, broke up with a good man, had to go back home, where people are shunning her, and she takes it like a champ. No selfpity, no finger pointing. Just ready and willing to start from scratch. Even when I was pretty sure I knew who the culprit was i found the mystery interesting, and the solution was very good. I hope to see more of Orion in the next books.

I know, everybody loves Amanda Ronconi and she did good, but the high pitches were sometimes annoying and often distracting.

Schreckliche Sprecherin, Heldin leider phasenweise total unsympathisch. Angeblich hassen sie alle, aber davon merkt man wenig.

Die Story ist ganz gut zu hören, aber man blickt erstmal gar nicht richtig durch, ob es sich um ein Mystery-Roman handelt und die Geschichte fängt „spannender“ an, als sie endet.
