Über diesen Titel

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of Underland, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers - precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

If you’re a fan of Alice in Wonderland, enjoy a dark twist and don’t shy from a little cruelty then this is the book for you. Plus it’s a trilogy!

I would place this series in the top 10. Although I loved reading the first book and am in the middle of the second, I have noticed that I am going through it slowly (with my normal reading pace, I take 3-4 days per book). I think that’s because this is a heavy kind of story. There is so much going on, that you first have to wrap your mind around all that’s happened. It’s a bewildering feeling, for I want to know what happens and want to continue reading but at some point my brain just stops with the uptake and I have to put it down.

So in summary: this is a new Alice in wonderland book, with a highly entertaining dark and moody atmosphere, dubious characters and more than one plot twist. Think: the Brothers Grimm meets Alice in wonderland.

wickedly lovely
