As an engineer I was motivated by how they were wild against the enineering problems that they encountered and yet never got intimidated. That is the way it should be. Moreover, it gives you a perspective on why US is the power it is today.

Great Motivational Book

This audio book provides a fascinating insight into Lockheed's skunk works, back in the days were clandestine projects were still fun and daring. I couldn't help myself but laughing out loud sometimes for the hilariousness if some andecdotes, such as Ben Rich racing over to Kelly Johnson's house to haul top secret documents from his basement.
I liked it a lot that Ben Rich's story doesn't just over his tenure as CEO of the Skunk Works, but also the interesting times at the beginning of the cold war era with the creation of the U2 and ultimately the A12/SR-71. I also didn't realize before what an amazing feat the F117A was.
From a management perspective, it was very interesting to hear how the Skunk Works were organized, by which rules they played and which insane political obstacles (besides the technical ones) they had to overcome with each project. Truly inspirational and applicable to today's corporate challenges any day.
Special kudos to the narrator: the perfect pick for this kind of story. He really brings this to life as if you were listening to Ben Rich himself; it's a real joy listening to his voice and lively storytelling, served with healthy dose of irony. You can literally hear Kelly Johnson talk every time the narrator starts a sentence with "Goddammit Ben..." - just hilarious.
If you enjoy aerospace and airplane tech as well as (aviation) history, go get this book. You won't regret it.

well written and well narrated--really gives you a feel for the "wild west of engineering" that took place during the Cold War era. In general, fantastic details and despite the bibliographical tone, till manages to tell a good story that hits emotional beats occasionally. My only criticism is that it gets a bit preachy and old-man-y at the end when they complain about the defense budget being cut, engineers being less talented, and a rising need for national defense, but, this is to be expected in a book written by 'big aerospace'.
