    Inhaltsangabe

From the development of the U-2 to the Stealth fighter, the never-before-told story behind America's high-stakes quest to dominate the skies. Skunk Works is the true story of America's most secret and successful aerospace operation. As recounted by Ben Rich, the operation's brilliant boss for nearly two decades, the chronicle of Lockheed's legendary Skunk Works is a drama of Cold War confrontations and Gulf War air combat, of extraordinary feats of engineering and human achievement against fantastic odds. Here are up-close portraits of the maverick band of scientists and engineers who made the Skunk Works so renowned. Filled with telling personal anecdotes and high adventure, with narratives from the CIA and from air force pilots who flew the many classified, risky missions, this book is a riveting portrait of the most spectacular aviation triumphs of the 20th century.

    Great Motivational Book

As an engineer I was motivated by how they were wild against the enineering problems that they encountered and yet never got intimidated. That is the way it should be. Moreover, it gives you a perspective on why US is the power it is today.

    Highly inspirational, incredible story

This audio book provides a fascinating insight into Lockheed's skunk works, back in the days were clandestine projects were still fun and daring. I couldn't help myself but laughing out loud sometimes for the hilariousness if some andecdotes, such as Ben Rich racing over to Kelly Johnson's house to haul top secret documents from his basement.
I liked it a lot that Ben Rich's story doesn't just over his tenure as CEO of the Skunk Works, but also the interesting times at the beginning of the cold war era with the creation of the U2 and ultimately the A12/SR-71. I also didn't realize before what an amazing feat the F117A was.
From a management perspective, it was very interesting to hear how the Skunk Works were organized, by which rules they played and which insane political obstacles (besides the technical ones) they had to overcome with each project. Truly inspirational and applicable to today's corporate challenges any day.
Special kudos to the narrator: the perfect pick for this kind of story. He really brings this to life as if you were listening to Ben Rich himself; it's a real joy listening to his voice and lively storytelling, served with healthy dose of irony. You can literally hear Kelly Johnson talk every time the narrator starts a sentence with "Goddammit Ben..." - just hilarious.
If you enjoy aerospace and airplane tech as well as (aviation) history, go get this book. You won't regret it.

interesting for an engineer. sad for a Humanist.

narrator was good. I enjoyed listening to him. as an engineer I lived the details of the book, the struggles engineers face and thw wonders they produce. however it sad how clearly the authour wants rhw governement to spend more on funding the army and military spending. the authour sees like many so called patriots, iran, north korea and pakistan a threat for owning nuclear Technology, yet the US has been the obly country that ever misused it. this book is on the political side, propaganda and brain washing at its finest.

    Good storytelling from interesting viewpoints

well written and well narrated--really gives you a feel for the "wild west of engineering" that took place during the Cold War era. In general, fantastic details and despite the bibliographical tone, till manages to tell a good story that hits emotional beats occasionally. My only criticism is that it gets a bit preachy and old-man-y at the end when they complain about the defense budget being cut, engineers being less talented, and a rising need for national defense, but, this is to be expected in a book written by 'big aerospace'.

The book for every engineering student

The story is kinda ok, as a engineering student you can see what work goes in constructing something. Not quite satisfied with the story, the parts where he mentions the people who had to remarie didn't give any useful information to the plot. And on the engineering side i found a lack of technical terminology. This book is for every person.

    A can-do story

Truth is stranger, and in my opinion, more interesting than fiction. Definitely a third commandment fail, though.
