Many consider the Battle of Midway to have turned the tide of the Pacific War. It is without question one of the most famous battles in history. Now, for the first time since Gordon W. Prange's best-selling Miracle at Midway, Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully offer a new interpretation of this great naval engagement. Unlike previous accounts, Shattered Sword makes extensive use of Japanese primary sources. It also corrects the many errors of Mitsuo Fuchida's Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan, an uncritical reliance upon which has tainted every previous Western account. It thus forces a major, potentially controversial reevaluation of the great battle.

Parshall and Tully examine the battle in detail and effortlessly place it within the context of the Imperial Navy's doctrine and technology. With a foreword by leading World War II naval historian John Lundstrom, Shattered Sword is an indispensable part of any military buff's library.

Very interesting view of the battle. Definately a must read for any interested in this particular part of the war. Your knowledge is incomplete if you don`t read this book.

The authors present a very detailed chronological report of the Battle of Midway, including the analysis of the decisions and military practices of the time, based on contemporary military literature from Japan rather than the usual works of the early 50s. This leads them to re-write some well believed parts of the course of events.
Their sometimes even gripping book is easily readable/audible even for non-professionals interested in military history.
In addition, Tom Perkinses narration is simply superb.

An excellent book that adds the Japanese perspective of the Battle of Midway and corrects a lot of wrong assumptions and myths on the US side. I recommend this book to every WWII history buff.

Correcting and updating the outdated US-view

Besides teaching about a fascinating bit of history, this book teaches so many lessons about strategy, tactics and life.

The narrator is good, too, although he sometimes gets the emphasis of a sentence wrong. (For example, the very last sentence of the book.) The pronuncation of Japanese names is passable, of Japanese words and phrases often so garbled that I can't understand what he's saying. But that has to be expected. It shouldn't keep anyone from listening to the book.
