Enjoying the story, but if they wanted it in SRP, then they should have chosen a British English speaker. Paul Boehmer is not the best reader by far.

The plot and the world are nice overall, but it took two long books (around 50 hours) for the story to reach the culmination, and not everybody might have patience for that. The reader is not bad, but he makes pauses and stresses in unexpected places, and that affects how engaging the audiobook is.

Slow story development and a weird reader

The story is implausible from beginning to end. Even the title is misleading, since the so-called assassin doesn’t commit a single assassination in two volumes (except for killing forged ones, which doesn't count). Unfortunately, that is only one of many issues. The entire plot is constructed so inconsistently that it often feels frustrating to follow. For example, what heir to the throne would allow a brother who had tried to kill him to continue unchecked—and even leave the kingdom for months so that this brother can seize power? And Regal, who despises Fitz and wishes him dead from the very start, then holds almost all power but never actually kills him. These are just two instances of how Hobb tries to create suspense by letting her characters act in ways that feel forced and implausible.

What makes matters worse is that the story drags on for nearly 30 hours, filled with endless, often self-pitying reflections by Fitz. Only toward the very end does the pace finally pick up. The main character himself is also a problem: Fitz is an ignorant, passive, and rather uninspiring anti-hero who gets everything wrong and then sinks into self-pity. I found nearly every side character more interesting than him. His sentimental love story only adds to the frustration.

That said, there are still a few strong moments, and I have listened to even worse fantasy. So, I give it two out of five stars.

... I am not a fan of every single good character behaving stupidly all the time so that the story can happen. Otherwise the book is very well written imo... but I won't listen to the next book in the series because of this issue.

Good worldbuilding and general storytelling, but...
