    Inhaltsangabe

These 36 intellectually challenging yet remarkably clear lectures take you on an intellectual journey to explore the questions of divine existence, not from the standpoint of theology, but as an issue of epistemology, the classic branch of philosophy that concerns itself with knowledge theory: how we can know things and how we can know we know them.

If you enjoy wrapping your mind around questions for which every potential answer triggers a new set of questions and issues, you will find this course particularly enjoyable, regardless of whether you define yourself as a believer, an atheist, or an agnostic. Professor Hall lays out many of the fundamental questions and issues related to the philosophy of religion: What do we mean by "God"? Consider the many characteristics of a monotheistic deity - including omnipotence, omniscience, omniperfection, and asceity.

Can we know if there is a God? Examine the ontological, cosmological, and teleological arguments for the existence of God and the problem of evil. Weigh the arguments and counterarguments for whether the existence of evil - sometimes natural and sometimes human - is compatible with the existence of a god.

You won't be surprised to discover that the issue of divine existence remains undecided after the arguments for and against have been put on the table and analyzed. This provocative course will hold the attention of believers, skeptics, and agnostics alike. While your mind may not be changed, it will definitely be put to work.

    Amazing and comprehensible.

very informative the first half part seems clearly nonpartisan, in the second half you start seeing the partying towards religious side but in a fair, interesting and critical style.

    The (ir)relevance of god

Generally I liked the course very much. The reading of Prof. Hall creates
a strong feel of dialogue that I never experienced in this form in other audio books. And though (or maybe because) we come from opposing standpoints (he is a believer, I am an atheist) I took a lot from the book. And if you have the luck to have children: Some of the later chapters about religion and its impact on society are wonderful discussion material.

Still, I think there a some shortcomings. In the discussion about divine encounters Prof. Hall discusses two critical points (fraud and the need for interpretation) but omits a discussion of the findings of neuroscientists regarding perceptions. Then there is this strange critic of Thomas Kuhns theory. Admittedly, I never knew about the impact of Kuhn on theologians but as far I understood Kuhn they simply misinterpreted him. And this misinterpretation is so stupid that Prof. Hall has a field day refuting it. Finally Pascals wager: At least from the historical standpoint this seems absurd as you have to pick up the "right" god. Ok, Prof. Hall concentrates on ethical monotheism, so there is only one god, but does god that?

And here a supplement to the chapters about the proofs for the existence of god: In the Muslim tradition there is the proof by beauty: The Koran is so wonderful and perfect, it can only come from god. If you read German: An in depth discussion of this argument is to be found in Navid Kermanis book "Gott ist schön".
