Phil Collins gained fame as both the drummer and the lead singer for Genesis and continues to enjoy worldwide success today. He's one of only three recording artists who have sold over 100 million albums both as solo artists and separately as principal members of bands - the other two being Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson.

Revered as a drummer, he's the only performer of distinction to have appeared at both the UK and US original Live Aid concerts, the creator of numerous worldwide hits, and an Oscar winner for the song 'You'll Be in My Heart' from the Disney film Tarzan.

Phil Collins' life has also been rich with experience outside of music, starting with his career as a child actor, appearing aged 13 as the Artful Dodger in the stage production of Oliver!, through Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Miami Vice and The Band Played On. In his memoir Phil talks honestly about his three failed marriages, his alcoholism and his ill health but also describes the highs and lows of his career and what it is like to work with other rock legends, from Eric Clapton to Robert Plant.

Very much a chronological autobiography. What happened? When and where? Interesting, sure. Not as entertaining as the autobios by Kevin Hart or Will Smith e.g.

Collins geht mit seinen Lesern um, wie er mit seinen Fans umgeht: schonungslos, offen und immer mit einem guten Schuss Ironie, auch wenn er aus seinen Geschichten immer mal wieder 'nicht nach Rosen duftend' herauskommt. Er hat eine erfrischende Art, die es sehr leicht macht, ihm zuzuhören (Ich hab da wirklich schon fürchterliche Sprecher erlebt...), als sässe man zusammen mit ihm in einem Pub bei einer Pint Bitter und er erzählte diese Stories nur so nebenbei. Es wird nie langweilig und man merkt sehr schnell, dass Collins in dem Buch vieles aufzuarbeiten gedenkt: Gerüchte, kaputte Ehen, sein Verhältnis zu seinen Kindern und auch sein Gesundheitszustand.
Alles in allem ist "Not dead yet" ein gelungener Rückblick auf 66 jahre Philip David Charles Collins, LVO, CBE.

Über die Musik von Phil Collins und Genesis lässt sich streiten, das Lebenswerk von Phil Collins muss schlicht anerkannt werden. Wenn er es dann noch persönlich vorliest, dann ist das beste Unterhaltung einer der ganz Großen im Musikgeschäft.

I liked Phil Collins songs so I thought why not listen to his life story, especially as it was narrated by himself. I have not expected anything so brutally honest, yet with great sense of humor and well presented. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in music and the world surrounding the music and theatre!
