 Dying is easy. Coming back to life is hard. At least that's what Miles Vorkosigan thinks, and he should know - having done both once already.

Thanks to his quick-thinking staff and incredible artistry from a medical specialist, Miles' first death wasn't his last. But it does take some recovery, a fact he has been reluctant to admit. When he makes the mistake of returning too soon to military duty, he finds himself summoned home to face the Barrayaran security chief, Simon Illyan.

But Miles' worst nightmares about Simon Illyan are nothing compared to Illyan's own nightmares. Under suspicion himself, Miles must seek out the answers to Ilyan's nightmares or see the inevitable destruction of Imperial Security and, with it, the Empire.

Miles hits thirty. And is Hard hit by his own failures. For the first time longer on his home planet suddenly he must help Simon personally. For Simon is lost in his own memories.

Der Sprecher ist so gut, wie man ohne Marc Thompson und Star Wars Stimmen/Sounds/Musik nur sein kann.

Die Geschichte ist vielleicht die spannendste, die über Miles geschrieben wurde und definitiv mein Lieblingsbuch über ihn. Ich war auch immer ein Riesen Fan von Illyan.
Man erfährt einiges über die Vorgänge um ihn herum, was mir auch beim inzwischen 4. Mal anhören positiv auffällt.

I'm very divided on this particular piece. McMaster-Bujold spends the first half of the novel trying to kill the listener's interest.

Luckily Gardner is a professional on a level that will keep you listening, although the story is boredom itself. For anyone familiar with Miles and his story so far his existential crisis is the main point remenissing and revisiting everything he has done thus far feels a bit like getting sidetracked.

I'm guessing the purpose is to build his character and to explore a counterpoint to his normally hyperactive character traits.
For me this half of the novel seems to have a dual effect: it makes Miles more human, but it also makes him less sympathetic, which to me just adds depth and colour. My gripe is, I guess that this could have been accomplished in a couple of chapters in stead of half the novel.

Halfway through the novel turns from a study of Miles into a Noir mystery and a whodunnit. The who is a bit obvious though, but the how is more interesting.

Not her finest Vorkosigan piece I think, but worth the time and effort for sure.

Hang in there. It gets better.
