One of the most thrilling audiobooks I heard since Corona startet and I heard quite a lot since then.
The world building is superb and the characters are highly relatable. I can't wait to continue this journey.
I'm afraid I am addicted to Jade now ☺️

Great first book in one of my favorite trilogies of all time. Like all good Mafia dramas it is primarily a story about a family with great ups and downs and most of all some of my favorite characters I ever met in a book.

Really great story that completely draws you in and doesn’t let go. Was not that into the idea of the setting before I started and now absolutely love it. Narrator does a great job too.

The story is not bad told and has its thrilling moments, but it is also somewhat meaningless. Two mafia-like clans are fighting each other, whereas the fighters have some supernatural strengths thanks to the stones of Jade. The Mountain clan is a bit more greedy and more cruel compared to the No Peak clan, and wants to force it out of business. So what? This is a rather common habit in these circles. I miss the bigger picture, the attracting element which glues me to the story. The Jade stuff is actually needless. The same story could be told without. Moreover, I miss likable characters, with whom I can share the thrill. Instead, the 'heros' are devoured by self-doubts, which is extensively described. These pagefilling psychlogical profilings become really boring after a while.

This is a great setting for people that enjoy a fantasy story in a more modern world. It feels like everything in this book takes place in a small corner of a much wider and interesting world.

I've finished sword of kaigen a few weeks ago so my opinion might be influenced by that but I feel like this story is just as depressing from beginning to end. It's pretty grim and I found myself having a hard time rooting for anybody and just when I started to like one character, it got killed off.
This book certainly wasn't for me and I won't start the next one in this series.
