Über diesen Titel
“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity." Xaden Riorson
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.
But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year. Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.
The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

If you are able to ignore the artificial "we can't be together, if you are not completely open to me" episode you get a great second part with a smooth, sometimes foreseeable (but not too bad) storyline. More rebellion, a lot of torture and pain, very very bad people (more black and white than shades of grey), a stubborn teenage dragon, nice new characters and a lot of: "I can only tell you something you already found out"
If you liked the first part, you will probably like the second one, too and the open plot in the end is not too bad for having to wait almost a year for the next part.
enjoy!
still a good story, still too much unrealistic sex, in the beginning annoying main character

A more than worthy sequel

1. Many magic/fantasy stories choose to start of in an academy/school with a teen, but then rush the story towards the second book into action, speeding up the main characters ability growth unnaturally in favor of depth. It happens here, but better executed than in most books, yet I do admit that I miss writers taking the time like Harry Potter did, slowly building characters and improving abilities.
2. Abilities concerning foresight and time travel are often problematic. Here a character seeing the future except if 3+ marked once are together, makes the events happen as a self-fulfilling prophecy. He can't see the future, only because his actions based on this incomplete knowledge make people/allies go there. Ergo it's a little bit of a bullshit story decision, but unavoidable because this ability is too powerful otherwise.
Beyond that the story is super cool, I just don't like story's deciding to do the world ending threat/war in the first trilogy of a world, with a barely trained teen as main character. It diminishes potential in character growth and future story's feeling relevant to be read after such an event. Who wants a sequel to LOTR when Sauron is dead, you know?
Recommendation.
Good, but with flaws

It was an enjoyable read. Some twists I did not expect, but they heaven't been really flashing either.
Over all I liked it, but I do not like the end. Le'ts see how the author will go on in book 3.
5 stars to Rebecca Soler for her work!
I did not like the end

Rebecca, if you read this: Can you please reverse some of this in a few happy endings. For, i don’t know.. X maybe? Also, you made me cry, not sleep and for a tiny second I thought to start smoking again.
Well done! <3
