London, June 2019. Maggie is 30, pregnant and broke. Faced with moving back to the home town she fought to escape, she’s wondering if having a baby with boyfriend Ed will be the last spontaneous act of her life. Ed, meanwhile, is harbouring secret dreams of his own.

Phil hates his office job and is living for the weekend, while falling for his housemate, Keith. But there’s a problem: Keith already has a boyfriend. Then there’s Rosaleen, Phil’s mother, who’s tired of feeling like a side character in her own life. She’s just been diagnosed with cancer and is travelling to London to tell Phil, if she can ever get hold of him.

McKenna says he’s inspired by Virginia Woolf, and it shows in the best of ways! He’s crafted an endlessly engulfing mosaic of characters, portraying their inner lives and the London they live in with brio and acute observations of their psyches. You’ll feel as if you‘ve made a couple of new friends while reading this novel, and the way in which McKenna weaves details into his story and picks them up again later is quietly triumphant, making you ache and rejoice alongside his cast of characters.
Additionally, Young is a narrator I loved listening to, and her interpretation of the words breathes even more life into the narrative than is already there.

A Mrs Dalloway for the present

This is one of the best orchestrated untidy books I've read in a long time.
There were so many different people who all had some facets I could find myself in. At the same time I got angry with them and their lack of open communication - which in some ways felt like looking into a mirror. Extremely uncomfortable at times, and then, a few moments later, like a soothing hug.
The narration was splendid.
I just wish the Princess of Whales were fluent in Whale, then she would've been more helpful.

Nothing is tied up - roads will be build!
