Uneingeschränkt empfehlenswert
Ich fand es einfach überragend. Es macht viel Spaß, Juliet Stevenson zuzuhören. Sie beherrscht die Kunst, mit ihrer Stimme nicht nur verschiedene Personen, sondern auch deren Stimmungen und Befindlichkeiten zu charakterisieren. Emma ist nicht mein Lieblingswerk von Jane Austen, aber so gelesen habe ich es mit Genuss zu Ende gehört. Der Vorteil bei einem Sprecher ist, dass man auch als mittelmäßig Englisch sprechender und im Hören nicht so geübter Mitteleuropäer praktisch alles gut verstehen kann. Meine anglophone Tochter (15 Jahre) kommt damit jedenfalls auch gut zurecht.

Delightful
Juliet Stevenson is a genius and makes each character come to life in their own right as well as transporting the quiet wit of the author‘s voice. A masterpiece by Jane Austen paired with a master actress.

Patriarchat mit Spaß
Lustig und verwickelt suchen Leute in verschiedenen Schichten ihr Glück in der Ehe. Ein Mann ist Großgrundbesitzer und lebt von Pacht und eigener Produktion. Einer hat studiert und eine gute Stellung in Aussicht. Der dritte Mann ist Pächter des ersten. Der vierte ist der schöne, junge Pfarrer. Die eine Frau hat einen vermögenden Vater und eine gesicherte Zukunft. Die zweite Frau ist Waise, Soldatentochter, aber gebildet. Stellenangebote als Gouvernante lehnt sie ab, da sie heimlich verlobt ist. Der Vater der dritten Frau ist unbekannt. Sie ist zu Beginn der Erzählung siebzehn Jahre alt und hilft in der Dorfschule. Die vierte stammt aus einer reichen Großgrundbesitzerfamilie. Zuneigung, Emmas Vorstellungen und Gerüchte im Dorf lassen dieses oder jenes Paar möglich scheinen. Doch sie heiraten gemäß der Startnummern und immer sind alle im Dorf überrascht. Ansonsten kommen einige Patchwork-Haushalte, Sinti und Roma und Bemerkungen über die Luftqualität in Stadt und Land vor. Alle gehen viel zu Fuß, Männer reiten bis nach London und zurück.
