Detective Sergeant Aaron Fowler of the Metropolitan Police doesn’t count himself a gullible man. A good detective story and a good love story with some nice ideas (like graphology) but nothing extraordinary, I find some other books of the author better.

I really liked this story! It made me smile and laugh multiple times, even through the rough spots. That’s a big reason why I admire KJ Charles sense of humor and subtle word choice, it lightens even dark topics without making too light of them. Joel reminded me a bit of Justin Lazarus, the Seer of London, another character of KJ Charles. Only that Joel’s graphology is the real deal, which opens up a completely new stage for the story to play out on. I adore both main characters and their growing relationship, because they are complex and messy and feel real. Just as their conflict with the laws of the past. As always, I love the author’s way of incorporating realistic historic scenarios and class struggle. Little things like an Indian restaurant in the 1920s and big things like police corruption showcase that the world wasn’t all that different back then.

I‘m hoping for a sequel…

I really love KJ Charles’s stories, but this was unfortunately one of her weaker ones. The relationship between the two main characters was rather shallow. While the story itself had some exciting moments, the romance felt very much in the background and showed little real development
