One terrible case always haunted detective Matt Ballard. Now many years later, the killer seems to be back. And this time he's after Matt.

When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught.

Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Then another murder happens, with some of the hallmarks of the old case. Has the killer returned, or is this just a sick copycat determined to ruin Matt's life and reputation?

it is not intriguing, I honestly don’t liked the narrated performance- sorry.

Gripping at the end

Another gripping story by Joy Ellis. As the synapses says with an unexpected twist near the end. Unfortunately the reader spoiled for me most of the story. The women sounded like a parody of a female. Often the dialogs were unreal and out of character to the person's portrait. I stuck to the story and do not regret it, but I wished Antony would have just used normal speach instead of his interpretation of a female voice

Speaker sounds unintentionally funny when impersonating women and villains.

Story hardly moves on before culminating in a chaotic mixture of deos ex machinae (surprise, surprise everything you read in the first two thirds was irrelevant and entirely different than it appeared).

You can’t help but stop caring about the answers to the deliberately placed open questions.

Artifical and weak Story

Listened to this as a bedtime story which it definitely isn't, so beware. 😉 The book's very vivid brutality is sure to creep into your dreams. At some point though I stopped caring about the characters because the plot seemed so far-fetched, while moving at a very slow pace and the violence was so bizarrely brutal that it just didn't touch me anymore.
The speaker does give funny voices to the female characters, as said by others before, making the women sound shallow and silly - but then many male narrators do, so I wasn't too much bothered by it.
The surprising and surprisingly sensible ending is by far the best part of the book and manages to save the story a little so I was glad I made it through.
I'd like to give 3.5 stars. Since the book was included in the membership, I went for 4.

Wie von Joy Ells gewohnt spannend. Eine von Beginn an fesselnde Geschichte mit einem überraschenden Ende.
