This book is beyond breathtaking. The plot is riveting, with twists you won’t see coming but that make sense when looking back. The characters are complex and realistic, no overt stereotypes. While they aren’t all good people, you can understand each of them and why they act the way they do. The relationships develop naturally and realistically. It all feels very real, you can get completely lost in the story. The writing is beautiful and captivating. You won’t want to put this book down.

Sehr kreative Idee und schöne Handlung. An manchen stellen einen Tick langatmig, aber immer noch eine super Geschichte. Ich freue mich schon sehr auf den zweiten Teil.

Die Grundidee ist interessant und auch gut umgesetzt. Der Verlauf der Ereignisse ist spannend erzählt und die Entwicklungen und Wendungen großteils nachvollziehbar.
Für meinen Geschmack gibt es leider ein paar Abschnitte, die zu langatmig und schnulzig sind. Aber darüber kann man gut hinwegsehen.
Ich werde mir den zweiten Teil auf jeden Fall auch anhören.

I was thoroughly charmed by Belladonna and will certainly read it again. It's a true Gothic Romance, with slightly more supernatural elements than I'm used to in this genre, plus they have a decidedly mythical quality - the perfect mixture for me. There was much more romance than I expected, but it was well done and tied the book together in a very satisfactory way.
The language is elegant and simple, and together with the fantastical elements I regularly got a very nice fairy tale vibe from it. There are also melancholic themes of loss and life, interesting characters with a complex inner life and a mystery with good plot twists. What more can you want from a book like this?

The following two books are weaker, as they do not have the same clear concept or execution, and either explain too much or to little of their mythical concepts for my liking. But it's still interesting to explore this world further and the entire series is pretty good entertainment.

The narrator of all three books Kristin Atherton is an absolute delight, she must be one of the best I've ever heard. She gives every character a unique voice and is marvelous at bringing emotion into their lines. I'd very much prefer listening to her perform these books in this very immersive fashion than reading them on the page.
