The historical inacuracies could be forgiven if it made for a better story, but I feel like history was way more spectacular than the author's interpretation. The fascination of Rome, and in this era more so than every other one, stands and falls with it's extraordinary characters,
Unfortunately the author chose to introduce unnecessary fictional characters of little depth instead. The substitution of historical characters turns Rome into some random village, and it belittles the achievments of Caesar.
The premises of complexity in the characters Marius and Sulla are thrown away in a simple good vs. evil plot. Reforms of Marius and the implications for the legions get kind of forgotten.
Cato, the great stoic is wasted as a moustache twirling fat villain. Pompeius is turned into a simple politician instead of a brilliant general and tactician. The ruthless genious of Crassus never shines through. The triumvirate is but a sidenote.
Cicero, one of the most famous romans ever, is non-existent. The conspiracy of Catilina is a joke. Labienus gets but a cameo. Brutus gets god mode.
If your fiction reduces history to some shallow generic story, why bother with history at all?
Entertaining, yes. But also disappointing.
Fiction crippling history

Es besteht eigentlich nur aus historischen Fehlern
