A Short History of Nearly Everything is Bill Bryson's quest to understand everything that has happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization. He takes subjects that normally bore the pants off most of us, like geology, chemistry, and particle physics, and aims to render them comprehensible to people who have never thought they could be interested in science. In the company of some extraordinary scientists, Bill Bryson reveals the world in a way most of us have never seen it before.©2003 Bill Bryson (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Welt Wissenschaft

Kritikerstimmen

"To read Bryson is to travel with a memoirist gifted with wry observation and keen insight that shed new light on things we mistake for commonplace. To accompany the author as he travels with the likes of Charles Darwin on the Beagle, Albert Einstein or Isaac Newton is a trip worth taking." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Stylish [and] stunningly accurate prose....Brims with strange and amazing facts...destined to become a modern classic of science writing." ( The New York Times)

A story told in mellifluous and admirably eloquence with a hearty grandfathers wit and charm. While iterating significant historic events of the earth and scientific discoveries, it entertains by framing these with humour, curious facts and providing personal glimpses into the becoming of discoveries and inventions.

Lovely and mostly entertaining

I went in to this book with low expectations since I study a science related subject and am already aware of the origins and applications of many concepts, but this book surprised me not only because of the beauty of the explanations and organisation, but also because of how wide the spectrum of topics is! It's not just physics or astronomy or biology, but all of it.
It truly is a short history of nearly everything!

Beautifully explained

An educational and fun to listen pop-science book on the knowlege we have about "everything" - and the history behind how we got there. BUT it was written around 2005 and some parts are dated, as in some areas we obtained a lot of new knowledge. E.g. the book acknowledges the "planed" New Horizons space mission to Pluto (that was launched 2006 and reached the dwarf planet in 2015), the Large Hadron Collider that "is to be built" and gives a number of around 30 Expolanets that were known at the time (huge progress was made following the launch of the Kepler Spacetelescope in 2009).

Fun and educational listen, but starts to be dated
