In Krimis von Robert Harris ist der Held oft nicht übermäßig heldenhaft: privat in unglücklichen Beziehungen, beruflich geachtet aber ein Außenseiter und daher nicht Teil des informellen Netzwerks. Was ihm zum Verhängnis wird: er sind anständig!

Diese spannende Schilderung der Dreyfuss- Affäre aus der Sicht eines Haupt-Protagonisten, des Geheimdienstchefs Picquard, folgt diesem Muster. Er entdeckt die Wahrheit und muss erfahren, dass seine Armee und ihre Führung keinen Fehler zugeben wollen. Spannend und historisch akkurat wird die Affäre aufbereitet. Nur gegen Schluss wird der Spannungsbogen einfach abgeschnitten und der Epilog wirkt geradezu wie aus einem anderen Film.

Trotzdem: ein echter Genuss, Geschichte so spannend und gut zugänglich zu erleben. Vor allem das frühe Geheimdienst-Millieu vor 1900 lässt an Spannung nichts vermissen. Picquard steht Bond um nichts nach...
