Über diesen Titel

A masterpiece of suspense from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child • Don’t miss the hit streaming series Reacher!

“The truth about Reacher gets better and better.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, eyes on the road. Another man next to him, telling stories that don’t add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And next to her, a huge man with a broken nose, hitching a ride east to Virginia.

An hour behind them, a man lies stabbed to death in an old pumping station. He was seen going in with two others, but he never came out. He has been executed, the knife work professional, the killers vanished. Within minutes, the police are notified. Within hours, the FBI descends, laying claim to the victim without ever saying who he was or why he was there.

All Reacher wanted was a ride to Virginia. All he did was stick out his thumb. But he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride. He has tied himself to a massive conspiracy that makes him a threat—to both sides at once.

In Lee Child’s white-hot thriller, nothing is what it seems, and nobody is telling the truth. As the tension rises, the twists come fast and furious, keeping readers guessing and gasping until the explosive finale.

Don't get me wrong, I love Jack Reacher and I am a very loyal fan and reader, but this book is very disappointing.
Jack Reacher’s strong character, his physical strength and his unbending principles resonate strongly with most of, because Jack Reacher is so different from us in many ways, but close to what we would like to be (at least sometimes).

Dick Hill did a great reading job and I like his sand paper voice, but of course, he cannot turn a lifeless story with a bizarre and far fetched plot into a good book.

Without giving away too much, I shortly outline the main story line. Jack Reacher is hitchhiking on a cold winter day in Iowa to make it to Virginia to meet a woman, he does not know. When he finally gets a ride, he figures out pretty soon that there is something very wrong with the two guys and the woman in the car. After driving around for ages and a couple of murders later, the FBI, the CIA and the State Department are on his tail and the events culminate in a ridiculous showdown with a terrorist organization.

Somehow I can’t help the feeling that Lee Child ran out of ideas and just took the usual ingredients and tried to stir it up to something like a story. It did not work. We get a lot of clichés and dumb remarks (the FBI does not shoot people, because the paperwork is too bad) and a lot of repetitions (phone messages are repeated several times), but it does not add up. The characters are flat, without depth and profile. Even Jack Reacher shows very little of his usual self and he appears tired and lifeless. Worst of all, Jack Reacher threatens and intimidates an innocent small girl to get some information, an outright disgusting and embarrassing scene. The story itself is flawed and does not make a lot of sense
.
I only hope, Lee Child gets his act together and we will see some of the old Jack Reacher again.
