Brilliant
I absolutely loved it!
If you enjoy historic romance, strong women and a twisting, twirling plot, this book is absolutely right for you. Also if you like books where the guy falls first or if you live for the enemies to lovers trope, listen to this. In fact the entire series is absolutely brilliant and I recommend each book. So don’t hesitate and buy this book. You don’t necessarily need to listen to the books in chronological order I listened to this one first, then the first and afterwards the third. It wasn’t a problem.

Wonderful story, boring narration
I came to these books after having been thoroughly horrified by the Bridgerton books. These are the polar opposite : they make repeated consent positively smoldering. Sadly, the narrator put a damp on the author's rhythm and excellent tension building, in the overarching story as well as in the passionate scenes. She speaks so slowly and with such careful diction that she transmits the aristocratic class of the people depicted in the book, but also a detachment that was clearly not intended in the story. The book is raw, vulnerable, layered and passionate, and I didn't find that in the voice actor. I'm sure she is very good, but I don't this is her optimal genre.

Good story but
there is a short but quite explicit retelling of cruelty against an animal (cat) that I wish I had known of before listening. I don’t think it was necessary for the story and it certainly dampened my enjoyment of the book. So this is your heads up!
