Über diesen Titel

My world isn't safe. The northern gate lies open, and monsters roam the land. Towns are locked behind walls, protected by the emperor and his Black Army. Once, a fated priestess and her four guardians kept the gate sealed with magic, but there hasn't been a priestess in over a century...or so I thought.

When a monster attacks me within the walls of my village, I am saved by Sir Forrest - the quiet former soldier who came to Istim three years ago. Turns out he's been watching me. Waiting for my powers to awaken. I am the fated priestess. But there have been others. The genius commander Abel and the Black Army have killed them all. Sir Forrest found out the truth, and now he is driven by his sacred mission to help me find my guardians and bring me to the gate. All I have to do? Find them and join with them in the Grand Quintet to grant them the powers I apparently hold, close the gate, and save the world...without suffering the same dire fate as the priestesses who came before me.

I've always liked attention...but this is too much.

Contains mature themes.

The story is somewhat interesting, but none of the characters are really that exciting. I’m considering the next book nevertheless.

First, the good: This story is fun, fast-paced, and decently written. The prose is fine, even if somewhat mired in odd anachronisms that sometimes don't fit the scenery, though that's not too distracting. I liked the setting and the main character, who is relatable, sympathetic, and far from perfect. She has an actual personality, which is appreciated. The plot is engaging, as well, and I was genuinely invested. The narrator is really good, probably the best part of this book. Now, onto the criticism: The world building is a little shoddy at times. The author's naming scheme is all over the place. I get using names from our world, but in our world, names have origins and are usually traceable to a certain region. This is not the case in this book. People have Greek names, French names, English names, and there is no indication that they originate from any culture, region etc. There's no apparent logic to the names, and that breaks suspension of disbelief a bit. This isn't how names work. And again, there are the odd instances of Xennial lingo (I am one, myself, like the author), such as floozie or dude, in this faux Renaissance setting. It's a bit distracting. The world itself is fine, but the details are either off or clearly not well thought out, which makes it seem like the author wrote this in a rush. She has talent and skill, in my opinion, but the book could use some fine tuning. Then, there's another thing, though this boils down to personal preference and is not a criticism per se: there is quite a bit of explicit adult content. The description for this book does not make it clear that there would be this kind of content. I, personally, am not a fan of this, and I found myself skipping those parts. It would have been nice to know beforehand that there would be these kind of scenes. Not to mention that one of the bad boy, mysterious love interests is really creepy and off-putting, but that's a matter of taste, too. Furthermore, there were some misogynistic undertones that I cared for very little. Also, the book ends on a major cliffhanger, meaning that the main conflict isn't even solved at the end, and that's not something I appreciate. All in all, this is a fun book that could use more stringent and thorough world building. I'm not sure if I will listen to the rest of the series, because I am not a fan of reverse harem explicit content. Adult entertainment is not for me. If you're looking for that kind of thing, you will eat this up.

Fun story, too explicit for my taste
