The Conservation Essentials Collection brings together six classics of American nature writing, wilderness reflection, and early conservation thought. Together these works trace a line from personal communion with nature to the broader conservation ethic that helped shape modern environmental thought.

The Land of Little Rain by Mary Hunter Austin, first published in 1903, contains a series of interrelated essays about the American Southwest. A theme of environmental conservation and a philosophy of regional culture loosely link the narratives. The first essay covers the "Country of Lost Borders," an area between Death Valley and the High Sierras. In "Water Trails of the Ceriso", the author describes the many animals that travel along the trails, including coyotes and quails. "The Scavengers" deals with carrion feeders like buzzards and crows.

First published in 1903, The Land of Little Rain is Mary Austin's classic homage to the American Southwest. Her collection of short stories and essays takes listeners on an enchanted journey through Death Valley, the High Sierras, and the Mojave Desert.

Welcome to the world of the Goodales, where the unspoiled wilderness reigns. In 1878, two girls from the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts brought nature into thousands of homes across the country. Their book of poetry became a best seller overnight and their names household words. It had never happened before--or since. Yet today, they have been largely forgotten. This is their story.

The Land of Little Rain is a book of sketches which portray the high desert country of southern California, where the Sierras descend into the Mojave Desert. Mary Austin finds beauty in the harsh landscape: "This is the sense of the desert hills--that there is room enough and time enough. . . The treeless spaces uncramp the soul." Her story begins with the water trails that lead toward the few life giving springs--the way marked for men by ancient Indian pictographs. Life and death play out at these springs. Rabbits fall prey to the coyote; buzzards hang heavily in the sky above. She then ...
