The case is closed. The record is not. Owen Marlow is back in Portland on no one's authority but his own. His contracting chain runs through a supervisor now on administrative leave—a suspension he triggered. He has no badge, no institutional standing, and no official role in the investigation. What he has is Rourke, a Portland detective who trusts his read, and a case that has sent him a note. The note was found at the third victim's scene. It was addressed to him. Mr. Marlow. You are reading the vocabulary correctly. You are reading the grammar incorrectly.

Owen Marlow is a former FBI behavioral consultant working cases on a contracted basis out of Olympia, Washington. He has no badge and no institutional protection. He keeps a notebook recording every case he has gotten wrong. There are twenty-three entries. The most significant is from Portland, seven years ago, when he wrote a word he has not written since. Three victims in the Seattle metro area. A staging detail no one has identified. A fifteen-year-old vote on a residential care facility that served non-verbal patients. Marlow reads the case correctly and closes it. The arrest is clean.
