Why have societies all across the world feared witchcraft? This book delves deeply into its context, beliefs, and origins in Europe's history. The witch came to prominence - and often a painful death - in early modern Europe, yet her origins are much more geographically diverse and historically deep. In this landmark book, Ronald Hutton traces witchcraft from the ancient world to the early modern state.

Every age is certain its witches are real. The old world had servants of the Devil; later centuries had wreckers, subversives, and enemies of the people; we have our own quiet vocabulary for the ones we agree to destroy. This book argues that beneath these changing costumes lies a single machine—old, patient, and unnervingly consistent—that any frightened community can assemble from the same few parts and set running almost by reflex. Traveling from the purification rituals of the ancient world to the accusation storms of the internet, Peter Kriger takes that machine apart piece by piece.

When bigotry and power mania take control, disaster always follows for subjugated persons - even when the power is wielded by the Church. Witchcraft was viewed as devil-worship. Between 1450 and 1750, 100,000 people were accused, subject to the most bestial tortures and usually executed. Witches examines the wildfire-spread of witch-hunting across Europe and America, revealing the disturbing and brutal realities of these witch hunts and their roots in misogyny and religious persecution.

Everyone knows Salem. Almost nobody knows Vardø. At the very edge of Europe, above the Arctic Circle, there was a place people believed stood on the boundary between this world… and something else. Salem was over in little more than a year. This had already been going on for 70 years. 91 people died, most of them women, in Norway's deadliest witch hunt. It began in 1619, when a Scottish sea captain arrived in this...
