A classic short story by Leo Tolstoy, this is the tale of the journey of Vasili Andreevich and his servant Nikita, set in rural Russia in the 1870's. It provides insight into the human character and condition, greed, and social hierarchy. Gripping, touching, and reflective.

In the story, a land owner named Vasili Andreevich Brekhunov takes along one of his peasants, Nikita, for a short journey to the house of the owner of a forest. He is impatient and wishes to get to the town more quickly to purchase the forest before other contenders can get there. They find themselves in the middle of a blizzard, but the master in his avarice wishes to press on. They eventually get lost off the road and they try to camp. The master's peasant soon finds himself suffering from hypothermia.

It happened in the seventies in winter, on the day after St. Nicholas's Day. There was a fete in the parish and the innkeeper, Vasili Andreevich Brekhunov, a Second Guild merchant, being a church elder had to go to church, and had also to entertain his relatives and friends at home. But when the last of them had gone he at once began to prepare to drive over to see a neighbouring proprietor about a grove which he had been bargaining over for a long time. He was now in a hurry to start, lest buyers from the town might forestall him in making a profitable purchase.

The book contains the story of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), "Master and Man".

"I slutändan borde människan inte fråga vad meningen med livet är, utan snarare inse att det är hon själv som frågas."Detta är en av de slutsatser som Viktor E. Frankl drar i logoterapin, den analysform som han ut-vecklade utifrån tre års erfarenhet som fånge i koncentrationsläger. Det var önskan om att sprida sina teorier som gav honom meningen med livet, som enligt honom själv gjorde att han överlevde under de mest omänskliga förhållanden.

Guy de Maupassant, (1850 - 1893), a native of Normandy, wrote in a bold and vigorous style that moves inexorably along clear plot lines. He had an astonishing capacity for creating believable characters, and he wasted little ink in putting his stories in motion. Maupassant was a master of "le mot juste," waiting until the perfect word came to him before setting his thoughts to paper. He was one of the first truly modern writers, and today his stories still resonate with enthusiasm and originality.
