Florence Nightingale is remembered the world over as the “Lady with the Lamp,” moving quietly through darkened hospital corridors during the Crimean War, bringing comfort and hope to wounded soldiers. Yet to leave her story at that glowing image is to miss the extraordinary breadth of her life’s work. Florence Nightingale was not only a nurse but also a visionary reformer, a relentless campaigner, and one of the first to use data and statistics as weapons for systemic change.

This is the uplifting story of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the founder of the modern nursing profession, from her earliest days as the daughter of English squire to her role as Angel of the Crimea, and her later life of service. With the training she received at hospitals on the Continent, she was fully prepared to care for the wounded in the Crimean War (between Russia and an alliance of Great Britain, France, and Turkey).

Before she even turned 40, Florence Nightingale was the darling of the British public, the heroine of the Crimea. She could have sailed home to England and comfortably lived out her days. Instead she conducted a postmortem on every moment of her wartime service. She sought to broadcast her mistakes so everyone would understand what happens in unsanitary medical facilities. One hundred and fifty years ago, the respect we now have for nurses and the intense training that nurses must undergo was nothing but a seed in Florence Nightingale's imagination.

Today, nursing is one of the most ubiquitous professions in the world, and images of war immediately call to mind nursing the wounded, but it was not long ago that such ideas were relatively primitive. Indeed, schoolchildren are still taught about the revolutionary exploits of Florence Nightingale, the war nurse who is often credited as the founder of modern nursing.

Su innegable contribución a la humanidad.

My late mother, Marianne (potential debutante, Barnardos children's nurse and granddaughter of Sir Richard Gregory), had been writing her memoirs, about her childhood living in rural Sussex during WWII, for half my life. Admittedly, I never had much interest in her writing, but when she passed away in July 2017--five-and-a-half long years after a long battle with vascular dementia--I collated all her paperwork (scattered everywhere throughout the family home as her mind worsened), and took it upon myself to self-publish her audiobook.
