No singer has been more mythologized and more misunderstood than jazz legend Billie Holiday, who helped to create much of the mystique herself with her autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues - and this authentic biography sets the record straight. Donald Clarke was given unrivaled access to a treasure trove of interviews from the 1970s with those who knew Lady Day in all stages of her short, tragic life - from her childhood in the streets and good-time houses of Baltimore, through the early days of success in New York and the years of fame, to her tragic decline.

"After Italy: A Family Memoir of Arranged Marriage" is the story of two marriages undone by a dowry and the fallout from that rift on three generations of a Southern Italian family. Enlisting Calabrian folklore, epigenetics, and psychology, Monardo writes from both sides of the ocean, charting her grandfathers’ immigration to a Pittsburgh steel town; her father’s WWII as a medical student in Naples; the family’s marriages—including her own—that were tainted by an Old World curse; and an unlikely path toward international adoption.

I grew up in Raleigh county, in a little town called Beaver, in the state of West Virginia. I lived on a 100-acre farm in a family of ordinary means. When I look back to my childhood I realize how fortunate I was to have clean air, clean water, vegetables from a thoroughly organic garden, fresh cow's milk, butter, and buttermilk—fresh every day. We gave the hogs what was left from each day so we raised great pork. Recycling was a part of life, not something you had to work into your habit.

Now, more than a century after her birth, Yunte Huang narrates Wong's tragic life story, retracing her journey from Chinatown to silent-era Hollywood, and from Weimar Berlin to decadent, prewar Shanghai, and capturing American television in its infancy.

'A bleak and vivid account' BBC Radio 4 ‘I am haunted by the feeling that it is not me I’m writing about, but some other man who lived through it all. It is as though I was watching a film about him, reading a book on him. And here is that book’ Shocking, but laced with wry humour...

Twenty years since its first publication, this new anniversary edition of the Holocaust memoir of George Salton (then Lucjan Salzman), gives listeners a personal and powerful account of his survival through one of the darkest periods in human history. With heartbreaking and honest reflection, the author shares a gripping first-person narrative of his transformation from a Jewish eleven-year-old boy living happily in Tyczyn, Poland, with his brother and parents, to his experiences as a teenage victim of growing persecution, brutality, and imprisonment as the Nazis pursued the Final Solution.

The best days of my childhood were on my grandfather’s farm. Equally, events that happened here left a permanent scar on my psyche. As the years rolled by, there was a realization in our family that malicious entities existed at this place. Also, perhaps an anathema was placed on this property, from ancient times.
