This week the world watched as I marked National Flag Day in Kyiv with a ceremonial flag-raising, honoring the enduring spirit and sacrifice of Ukrainians as we approach Independence Day. I spoke passionately about what our blue and yellow banner means—not just a symbol but the heart of our unity and the dignity of our defenders according to Euronews. Amidst relentless Russian strikes, I reaffirmed that our flag is the dream and purpose for millions including those in still-occupied territories and reminded the world that Ukraine will not surrender its land. In the same breath, I publicly accused the Kremlin of dodging peace talks and called for more intense pressure from our allies to bring Russia to the table, highlighting—once again—that Vladimir Putin seems intent on prolonging war, not ending it.
Security guarantees have dominated my agenda. On Friday I hosted NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Kyiv, where we discussed the urgent need for powerful security commitments from NATO allies and debated what real protection for Ukraine should look like in a post-conflict landscape. Rutte and I made it clear that the prior Budapest Memorandum and Minsk agreements were empty promises—this time, real assurances are non-negotiable, and our teams are synchronizing efforts with the US and key European partners. I also conferred by phone with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, welcoming Dutch support and discussing joint defense projects and economic investments, because victory for Ukraine means building strength for Europe and our children’s future according to the Office of the President of Ukraine.
Earlier in the week, I was in Washington for a whirlwind of diplomacy as President Trump hosted a high-level summit attended by President Macron, Chancellor Merz, Prime Minister Starmer, and other top leaders. Trump and I together presented a newfound unity after sometimes difficult prior meetings, with the American president promising Ukraine ‘very good protection’ and voicing support for a ceasefire to save lives immediately, as reported by ABC News and TF1-LCI. European officials pressed Trump—on camera—for NATO-like security guarantees for Ukraine before any further talks with Russia, and as always, I said Ukraine is ready for trilateral negotiations.
On the sanctions front, I issued new synchronized actions with Canada, targeting 139 individuals and legal entities linked to Russia’s military-industrial effort and information war, as reported by the Office of the President. We also sanctioned those involved in illegal business activities and Kremlin propaganda in temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. As I explained on social media and at the Veterans Forum, building a powerful Ukraine is not just about defense but about charting a future with true peace, independence, and global partnership—a message that’s resonated widely in both news cycles and online chatter, with widespread solidarity from world leaders and citizens alike.
