  • Memories of the Tragically Hip - "Good Dudes"
    Oct 2 2025

What kind of men were the Tragically Hip? They were for decades the seminal Canadian rock & roll band.

Degan and Chris explore masculinity and personal growth through the lens of the documentary "Long Time Running," which chronicles the Hip's final tour.

As fans of the band, they delve into the significance of the Hip's music, band dynamics, and the persona of lead singer Gord Downie. They reflect on the themes of vulnerability, masculine identity, and emotional connection that permeate The Tragically Hip's legacy.

That last tour, especially the nationally televised final concert in Kingston, ON, was a moment of shared grief for Canada, and we couldn't have asked for better guys to represent us.

Watch "Long Time Running" on CBC Gem.

  • Oh Superman - Man of Steel in Turbulent Times
    Aug 6 2025

Identity, heroism, and what it means to do good. In this episode, we review the new Superman movie and explore the superhero's symbolic evolution over the years from a Depression-era champion of the oppressed to a modern-day figure wrestling with the public perception of him as an 'alien.' The episode also delves into broader themes of loneliness, heroism, and the complicated idea of the "maverick" making his own decisions without regard for anyone else's point of view.

What other movies should we see?

  • At the Movies - 2012's The Hunt
    Jul 15 2025

Degan and Chris delve into the 2012 Danish film 'The Hunt' to explore themes of masculinity, false accusations, and the devastating effects on a tight community. They discuss how these issues impact men's roles today, drawing parallels to social media and the broader cultural landscape.

This is a tough movie to watch but worth seeing. It really provoked one of our favourite conversations yet for this podcast. We hope you like it!

  • At the Movies - A Complete Unknown
    Jul 1 2025

Are you tired of Chris and Degan agreeing all the time? Well they get into it talking about the portrayal of men and music in the Bob Dylan biopic, "A Complete Unknown."

Is this a groundbreaking story of a genius coming of age or a cliche-ridden dud about a self-important artist? Spoiler - it's neither.

We say very nice things about the cast, especially Timothee Chalamet, and we discuss the ongoing influence of Dylan's music and lyrics. Can you guess our favourite Dylan song?

Then we wonder - who is the Dylan of today? Who is the "protest" poet who will meet the moment while keeping us dancing and singing along?

  • Shame Shame Shame (This episode is more fun that it sounds!)
    Aug 20 2024

Hosts Chris Garbutt and Degan Davis discuss the tropes of action movies where male heroes transform shame into heroism, referencing classics like 'Rambo.' They relate this to real-life bullying and chronic shame, drawing distinctions between guilt and shame. The episode touches on the impact of bullying, the importance of friendships, and how male dynamics can either contribute to or heal shame. The hosts also explore broader societal influences and the importance of supportive male relationships. They end by hinting at an upcoming discussion on joy in masculinity for their next episode.
