  • Episode 11: Renewed Focus on Mental Health

    Dr. Jimel Gibbs is our featured guest in this episode. Tune in as she discusses having a "renewed focus" on mental health.

    Dr. Jimel's Bio:
    Dr. Jimel L. Gibbs has earned dual board-certifications as a family and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. She is a three-time graduate of The University of Alabama earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (2006), Master of Science in Nursing (2011), and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (2020) from The Capstone. She obtained her Post-Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner from Troy University in 2016. In 2023, she completed a Post-Doctoral Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. Dr. Gibbs is licensed by the Alabama Board of Nursing and is board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) as a Family Nurse Practitioner and by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She is a distinguished member of the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.

    Jimel currently serves as CEO of Renewed Focus Consulting, an organization with a mission to encourage, inspire, and promote holistic health and wellness behaviors within the local community.

    Dr. Gibbs earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from The University of Alabama with a primary focus on chronic pain therapies utilizing non-opioid approaches. She has an extensive clinical experience in acute care nursing with a history of caring for children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Dr. Gibbs serves as a preceptor and mentor to numerous registered nurse and nurse practitioner students.

    In 2024, Dr. Gibbs was chosen as the “Nurse Practitioner of the Year” by the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama and this is an honor that made her extremely proud. Additionally, Dr. Gibbs has actively served on several committees for her local, state, and national organizations. She has also volunteered and raised funds for non-profit organizations such as the United Way of Central Alabama and the Alabama Alzheimer's Association. In addition to being a successful motivational speaker, wellness coach, and mentor, Dr. Gibbs is a wife and mother who enjoys spending time with her family and participating with her local church ministry.

    Dr. Fatima’s Bio:

    Dr. Fatima Robertson embarked on her dental journey at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she earned both her DDS and Periodontal certificate. Following three years as a practicing general dentist, she pursued specialization in Periodontology, becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

    Today, Dr. Robertson practices full-time as one half of the Center of Endodontics, Periodontics, and Implantology, bringing over 24 years of expertise to her patients. With a focus on perio plastics, she has become a leading figure in her field, known for her commitment to excellence and patient care.

    Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Robertson has served as a national spokesperson for Sensodyne and Baylor Scott and White Health Systems, advocating for dental health awareness and education. She finds great fulfillment in mentoring aspiring dental students, guiding them towards success in both clinical practice and the business aspect of dentistry.

    Outside of her professional pursuits, Dr. Robertson cherishes her role as a mother to three budding adults and enjoys quality time with her husband of 25 years. She finds solace in reading books on personal development and cooking a healthy version of soul food.

    Dr. Kennedy’s Bio:
    Kierstin Cates Kennedy, MD, MSHA is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Chief Medical Officer for UAB Medicine. A 1,207 bed quaternary hospital and academic health science center, UAB Hospital is the 8th largest hospital in the US and serves as the only ACS verified Level I Trauma Center in the state of Alabama.

    Dr. Kennedy graduated from the UAB Heersink School of Medicine in 2007 and completed her combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency training at UAB Hospital. She completed the Executive Master of Science in Health Administration program at UAB in 2011 and went on to complete a fellowship in quality improvement via the VA Quality Scholars Fellowship in Birmingham, AL. She has held numerous leadership roles in quality and operations, including medical director for the UAB Compliant Documentation Management Program, Director of Quality for Hospital Medicine, and Chief of Hospital Medicine with achievements in process redesign that have yielded sustained improvement in both quality and efficiency in care delivery. In 2014 she created the UAB Procedure Service which has celebrated nearly a decade of decreased time to procedure by more than 50% , a 93% procedure success rate and less than 0.2% complication rate. She also went on to create the UAB Comprehensive Vascular Access Team (CVAT), a multidisciplinary consult team designed to reduce delays in obtaining vascular access ranging from peripheral IVs to central venous catheters.

    Dr. Kennedy is a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Board of Directors and both course director and faculty for the SHM Leadership Academy. She speaks nationally on leadership topics such as conflict resolution for leaders, emotional intelligence, building high performing teams and leveraging positive psychology to drive quality improvement, and teaches physicians and students across the United States how to safely perform ultrasound guided bedside procedures. She is a past winner of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Dean’s Excellence Award for Service, the UAB Alumni Society Distinguished Alumni Award, the ACLGIM Unified Leadership Training in Diversity award, and the national Paul Batalden Award from the VA Quality Scholars program. She holds the designation of fellow with the American College of Physicians and senior fellow with the Society of Hospital Medicine.
