  • Episode 17. King James VI of Scotland and I of England, Part 1
    Jun 12 2025

Welcome back, folks! Today's episode is all about King James the Sixth of Scotland, First of England. King James of Bible translating fame.

As with most monarchs in those days (and any days, really), King James had quite the eventful life - right from the start. We ended up deciding to split this into two episodes, so stay tuned for the completion of King James' story next time!

If you've listened to any of our previous episodes, you know the drill - we discuss some sensitive topics, use some strong language, and make some spicy jokes. We hope you enjoy the episode!

  • Episode 16. Politics
    Nov 11 2024

In today's episode, Destiny and I delve into our thoughts on the US presidential election. More specifically, we discuss our thoughts on how people all over social media have been reacting to the results of the election. Needless to say, this episode may press a lot of peoples' buttons. We discuss a lot of social issues and sensitive topics in this one, so be warned. And keep in mind: all of this is from our perspectives based on what we've seen. Just our opinions. If you disagree with any of it and want to give any of your thoughts about it, you can do so on Instagram (spectrumoflifepodcast), on X (@OurSpectrumPod), or you can email us at spectrumoflifepodcast@gmail.com.

We welcome polite discourse, so as long as you keep it cordial, we will too. If you don't keep it cordial, we'll probably just ignore you. Sorry, not sorry.

Regardless, we hope you enjoy this installment of two average people pontificating on the nuances and drama of US politics!

The music is from Monument Studios, and AI Terry is our brother from another mother...or cell phone. Whatever.

  • Episode 15. Midwatch Conversations
    Oct 31 2024

In today's episode, we decided to do things a little differently. We've been unscripted before, but usually with a general topic in mind. Not today, folks. Today we introduce a concept that Destiny, Ian, and I discussed a couple of weeks ago: midwatch conversations. A segment where we sit and talk as if we were on watch in the middle of the night. If you've ever stood a watch, or a guard shift, or done some other similar job, you know that sitting (or standing) around with a coworker for several hours in the middle of the night with nothing much to do but talk can lead to some...interesting conversation.

With this comes some additions to our disclaimers: if there is anything that you feel shouldn't be openly discussed, much less joked about, or if you tend to get offended easily, any episode you see in the future with "Midwatch Conversations" in the title...you should probably skip it. They have a tendency to get pretty weird, often offensive, sometimes downright effed up. Today's is a little tamer than many real-world midwatch conversations I've had, but we do talk about several potentially triggering topics. So, if you are easily triggered, no shame in passing up on this one. Don't say we didn't warn you.

  • Episode 14. Vigilante Justice
    Oct 23 2024

In today's episode, Destiny and I discuss a couple of true stories of vigilante justice, as well as a few other crime stories Destiny gets reminded of as we go. And as always, we discuss the social implications and our opinions on the stories. Hope you enjoy the episode!

Quick caveat: there is some graphic content in this episode. Some of the crimes discussed include sexual assault and sexual abuse of a child. And given the nature of the episode's theme, we also talk about some extreme violence. If that's not something you're comfortable hearing about, there's no shame in skipping this episode.

  • Episode 13. The Great Khan
    Oct 13 2024

In this week's episode, Destiny and I are joined by Ian as I tell the story of the legendary Genghis Khan. We discuss his early life, how he rose to power, and his forging of the world's largest ever contiguous land empire. This is a very interesting story, one that I very much enjoyed researching and writing.

As you may have guessed, there is a lot of talk about gratuitous violence, rape, and slavery. So if any of that isn't your cup of tea, maybe take a pass on this one. We won't fault you for it.

  • Episode 12. Words are words
    Oct 1 2024

Welcome back! In today's episode, Destiny and I go unscripted again and discuss "offensive" words and the sensitivities that surround them. Fair warning, this episode has some hot takes and we use a lot of words that people find offensive and/or triggering. So, if that's going to be an issue for you, there's no harm in skipping this one. If you decide to listen, we hope you enjoy our pontification.

  • Episode 11. Witchcraft!
    Sep 24 2024

Schedules have been crazy, and someone (Destiny) decided to get sick. But she sucked it up for a night and pulled through for us. So, Kudos to her.

On this episode, we discuss the basis of the views that sparked the witch hunt hysteria throughout the medieval and early modern period. We get into some of the religious zealotry that drove all that nonsense. We also touch on the Malleus Maleficarum written by Heinrich Kramer, a Catholic clergyman, published in 1496; and Daemonologie, written by King James the Sixth of Scotland/the First of England, and published in 1597 - 14 years before he published "his" "translation" of the Bible. Both books (Malleus Maleficarum and Daemonologie) were viewed as definitive works on the nature of witches, why they're so evil, and what to do about them. It's some wild stuff, and I highly recommend reading both books, as tough as they can be to get through. At some point, we'll do deep dives into various witch trials throughout Europe and the US, for which this episode is intended to be somewhat of a foundation.

Feel free to contact us on Instagram (spectrumoflifepodcast), on X (@OurSpectrumPod), or email us at spectrumoflifepodcast@gmail.com. We'd love to hear from you!

You can find the show on Spotify, Amazon Music, Audible, and Samsung Podcasts.

You can also read the Malleus Maleficarum and Daemonologie in the Internet Archive at www.archive.org, which is an online repository of over 4 million books. You can create a free account and have access to all of them. Our music is from Monument Studios, which is not free but also isn't that expensive and is well worth the money. Terry comes to us from Destiny's phone. I don't know what new-fangled thing she uses - I'm fairly useless with that kind of stuff. It's probably some kind of witchcraft. Ask her.

We hope you enjoy the show, and we'll talk to you all next week!

  • Episode 10. Dyatlov Pass
    Sep 7 2024

In this episode, we revisit a couple of things I said in previous episodes. Then we discuss what we had intended to cover in Episode 8 but ended up getting horribly sidetracked from. This is the story of nine expert cross-country trekkers (not trekkies!) who died while hiking in the Ural Mountains in Russia in February of 1959. The scene the search parties came across when they found the camp led to a lot of wild speculation at the time - which is very understandable. It was a confusing scene, and no one survived to clear up what had actually happened to the group.

We discuss common theories and talk things out to come up with our own. We hope you enjoy this episode and would love to hear your thoughts on the incident.

You can reach us on Instagram (spectrumoflifepodcast), on X (@OurSpectrumPod), or email us at spectrumoflifepodcast@gmail.com.

The thumbnail for this episode is a picture from one of the cameras recovered at the camp. It's public domain and you can find this one, along with many others taken during that ill-fated journey, attached to basically every online article you can find about the event. Or with a basic Google image search.
