The Profiling Evil Podcast delves into unsolved criminal cases from around the world, peeling back the layers of human behavior to reveal what drives evil. We look into the mind of the predator—their motivations, their victim selection, and the patterns that expose them. Each episode goes beyond headlines, examining how investigators identify red flags, connect the dots, and capitalize on the very errors offenders believe will never be found.

Your host, Mike King, brings over four decades of experience in criminal justice and behavioral analysis. A retired law enforcement executive, Mike served as Chief of Staff to Utah Attorney General Jan Graham and Weber County Attorney Reed M. Richards. He began his career at the Ogden Police Department, where he worked patrol, motor enforcement, and SWAT before moving into investigations where he led task forces that hunted serial predators and violent offenders.

Mike’s expertise earned him national recognition. He served as co-chair of the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) National Advisory Board, directed UTAP, the Utah Criminal Tracking and Analysis Project, and supported intelligence operations during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

After retiring from public service, Mike joined the Environmental Systems Research Institute (Esri), where he spent years consulting with police agencies around the globe on intelligence gathering, emergency communications, and major event management. In 2024, he retired again, this time to focus full-time on Profiling Evil and its growing community of true crime investigators, students, and enthusiasts.

Mike is an internationally recognized speaker, trainer, and adjunct professor, as well as a visiting scholar at multiple universities. He’s authored several acclaimed works on crime and human behavior, including:

    Join Profiling Evil in the field as Mike hits the road across Utah and Nevada, tracing a line through some of the West’s most haunting murder cases and forgotten crime scenes. The journey begins with the murder of Dylan Rounds, then heads south past the Bonneville Salt Flats into Wendover, Nevada, where 16-year-old Micaela Costanzo was brutally murdered by Kody Patton and Tony Fratto. From there, the road leads toward Ely and the dark legacy of the Casanova Killer, Paul John Knowles, a roaming serial murderer believed to have killed as many as 35 people across the United States—including a police officer and a vacationing couple near Ely.

    The trip continues into Tonopah, Nevada, home to one of the most unsettling stops in America—the Clown Motel—and the historic Tonopah Cemetery next door. Buried there are some of the West’s most notorious figures, including the Marojovich Brothers, William “Big Bill” Murphy, George “Devil” Davis, Sheriff Thomas Logan, the Merton Brothers, Bina Verrault, Stella Campbell, and many others whose stories still linger in the desert air.

    The road trip wraps up with a look at the Righteous Branch Church and the pyramid where its members worship—an isolated structure that raises more questions than answers. This is a journey through desolation, violence, belief, and forgotten history. You won’t want to miss it.

    The Brendan Banfield double-murder case is finally headed to trial, and once a case reaches that point, the conversation has to change. This stops being about speculation and becomes about evidence, witnesses, and whether a story actually holds up inside a courtroom. Let’s walk through what jurors are really going to be asked to decide. What happened inside that Virginia home in February of 2023, when Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan were killed. Was it a murder conspiracy hatched by Brendan Banfield and the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães. They both shot Ryan. Then we’ll look at the FetLife “catfishing” theory and the state’s allegation that Brendan Banfield used the site to lure Ryan to the home as part of an elaborate scheme.

    Is the au pair’s story legit, even though her testimony bought her a better deal in the courts? We’re not judging character, we’re wondering how the jury will see things. This case has mystery, alleged conspiracy, prosecutorial problems and questions surrounding the digital investigation.
