In Chapter 23, "Witty Words from 'The West Chamber' in Playful Speech; Seductive Songs from 'The Peony Pavilion' Alarm a Tender Heart," Cao Xueqin paints an exquisite, poetic picture within Prospect Garden.

Under the spring crabapple blossoms, Jia Baoyu accidentally acquires a copy of the play "The West Chamber" (西厢记) and reads it in the company of Lin Daiyu. The two "steal a look" at this banned book under the flowers. Daiyu is deeply moved by the clever words, and Baoyu uses lyrics from the play to confess his affection for her. Though shy, Daiyu tacitly accepts his feelings. In this moment, the spring scenery and their emotions intertwine in a pure and beautiful way.

However, beautiful moments are fleeting. On her way back, Daiyu accidentally hears little actors rehearsing a seductive song from "The Peony Pavilion" (牡丹亭). The tantalizing and premonitory lyrics (like "Such a fine hour, such a beautiful scene, yet what a day! Whose family's courtyard possesses delightful sights?") cause her to be moved by the sight and fall into melancholy. She laments her own fate like that of Du Liniang, with a woman's feelings yet difficult to meet a true friend, only able to waste her time in this lonely Prospect Garden. This "seductive song" not only alarms her heart but also hints at the tragic fate of the Jia family's inevitable decline, adding a touch of sadness to the entire novel.

In Chapter 21, "Wise Xiren Admonishes Baoyu with Tender Pique; Clever Ping'er Rescues Jia Lian with Soft Words," Cao Xueqin shifts the spotlight to the extraordinary emotional intelligence and survival wisdom of two crucial maids in the Jia household.

First, the devoted maid Xiren uses a passive-aggressive "strike" to lovingly scold Jia Baoyu for his overly playful behavior with the girls, successfully forcing him to promise to behave better. Meanwhile, the sharp and compassionate Ping'er discovers evidence of Jia Lian’s infidelity (a lock of hair).
