In Chapter 22, "Jia Baoyu is Enlightened by Zen Contemplation while Hearing Opera; Jia Zheng is Saddened by Lantern Riddles as Fate and Prophecy," Cao Xueqin shifts the focus to the two distinct ways the family interacts with fate and spirituality.

First, Baoyu hears a performance of a Zen-infused opera and has a moment of spiritual awakening. He begins writing Zen contemplation on a pensive-diagram scroll. Daiyu and Baochai (like image_28.png figures style) debate and add to his thoughts, pushing the meditation further. Meanwhile, at the Lantern Festival, Jia Zheng reads the riddles created by his children and Concubine Yuanchun. Each riddle seems like a tragic prophecy ("谶语") about the family's fall. He is overcome with a profound sadness ("悲"), realizing their tragic foreshadowing.
