In Chapter 21, "Wise Xiren Admonishes Baoyu with Tender Pique; Clever Ping'er Rescues Jia Lian with Soft Words," Cao Xueqin shifts the spotlight to the extraordinary emotional intelligence and survival wisdom of two crucial maids in the Jia household.

First, the devoted maid Xiren uses a passive-aggressive "strike" to lovingly scold Jia Baoyu for his overly playful behavior with the girls, successfully forcing him to promise to behave better. Meanwhile, the sharp and compassionate Ping'er discovers evidence of Jia Lian’s infidelity (a lock of hair). Instead of reporting it to her fiercely jealous mistress, Wang Xifeng, Ping'er uses gentle words to hide the evidence and save Jia Lian from a massive household scandal. Both maids demonstrate their brilliant ability to navigate the complex, dangerous waters of the aristocratic family.
