Johnny Eck, born John Eckhardt Jr. in Baltimore in 1911, became one of the most recognizable sideshow performers of the twentieth century. Promoters called him the “Half-Boy” and later Ripley’s Believe It or Not! advertised him as “The Most Remarkable Man Alive.” Those labels sold tickets, but they concealed the larger life of a performer, illusionist, actor, musician, painter, photographer, model maker, puppeteer, arcade operator, and Baltimore screen painter.

Eck entered professional entertainment as a child after a magician saw him move rapidly on his hands at a Baltimore performance. His twin brother Robert became his collaborator, pianist, traveling companion, and partner in one of stage magic’s most startling illusions. Johnny’s work took him through circus and sideshow circuits, to MGM’s 1932 film Freaks, and into creature costumes for Tarzan films. Yet Hollywood preserved only fragments of his skill while controlling the images that made him famous.

A physician discovered that the former sideshow performer known across America as “The Four-Legged Girl from Texas” was pregnant.
