In 1886, a circus pitch card presented Ella Harper under the historical billing “Camel Girl.” The card described her movement, promoted her appearance with W. H. Harris’s Nickel Plate Circus, and printed a striking statement under her name: that she intended to leave show business, attend school, and prepare for another occupation.
The surviving record does not confirm whether that educational plan happened. But it does follow Ella into adulthood. The next strong record places her in Sumner County in 1900 with her widowed mother. Later documents record her marriage to Robert L. Savely, the brief life of her daughter Mabel, a Nashville household, a church affiliation, the death and burial of an infant named Jewel Savely, and Ella’s death in Nashville in 1921.
