The flagship FIFO show. The work, the camps, the money and the cost of the roster — one story a week from Australian resources work, told properly.

Longform stories built from the records of the industry: what a swing actually pays and what it actually costs, how a camp runs, what happens when a mine opens and when it closes, and the people who fly in and out of the country's most remote workplaces.

Not recruiting content and not doom content. Sourced from company announcements, government approvals, published pay data and the industry's own records.

For FIFO workers, their families, and anyone weighing up whether the roster is worth it.

  • What 2:1, 8:6 and Even Time Actually Mean

What 2:1, 8:6 and Even Time Actually Mean
    11 Sep 2026
Every FIFO job ad leads with the roster, and most blokes read it as a number. It isn't — it's the shape of the next few years of your life. What each roster actually costs in days on site, why twelve-hour shifts change the maths, why rosters are set by flight and camp economics rather than your wellbeing, why recovery time isn't free time, and why the person at home is on a roster too. Plus where to check the award or agreement that actually covers the job. FIFO rosters explained: 2 and 1, 8 and 6, even time, night shift, swings and shutdowns. General information, not advice — advertised rates are advertised, not guaranteed.
