    One of the most multi-faceted minds in roots music, Alison Brown is a GRAMMY-winningmusician, GRAMMY-nominated producer, former investment banker and co-founder of The CompassRecords Group which will celebrate its 30 year anniversary in 2025.Alison has built a reputation as one of today’s most innovative banjo players, known for taking the instrument far beyond its Appalachian roots by blending bluegrass and jazz influences into a sonic tapestry that has earned praise from tastemakers including The Wall Street Journal, CBS SundayMorning and People.


    On her most recent release On Banjo, Alison continues her musical explorations ona set of original compositions with special guests including Kronos Quartet, Anat Cohen, Sierra Hull andactor/comedian/banjoist Steve Martin with whom she is a frequent collaborator. Their most recent single “Bluegrass Radio” debuted at #1 on the bluegrass radio and received a 2024 Bluegrass Music Association nomination for Collaboration of the Year.

    Alison is the recipient of the USA Artists Fellowship in Music and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association. A pioneer among women in the music industry,Alison was the first female to win an Instrumentalist of the Year award from the IBMA; in 2019,she became the first female 5-string banjoist to be inducted into the American Banjo Museum’s Hall of Fame. In 2023 she launched a banjo school on the Artist Works teaching platform.

    Alison serves as Vice President of the Nashville Chapter Board of Governors of the Recording Academy and as co-chair of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize.  She lives in Nashville with her husband and Compass Records co-founder Garry West.
