  • Elvis & Buddy: The Story Behind The Story
    Jun 11 2025

Host Brian Smith discusses the epic meeting of two future icons of Rock n Roll. On February 13, 1955, at the Fair Park Coliseum in Lubbock, Texas, Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly crossed paths, a significant event for music history. Yet it is rarely discussed by music historians.

Elvis Presley was performing as "The Be-Bop Western Star of the Louisiana Hayride". Buddy Holly, then a senior in high school, was part of a local country-and-western duo called "Buddy and Bob", who opened for Elvis. This performance was the first booking Elvis' manager, Colonel Tom Parker, secured for him directly.

Buddy Holly was so inspired by Elvis' performance that it influenced his own transformation from a country artist to a rock-and-roll pioneer. This meeting marked a turning point in Buddy Holly's career, leading him to open for Elvis multiple times that year and eventually gaining recognition from Decca Records, which contributed to his later success with the Crickets.
