  • EP 91: "Terror in Wichita" — The Story of 'Bind-Torture-Kill' Killer Dennis Rader (Part IV)
    Jun 6 2025

You knew we weren’t done yet. In Part 4 of the BTK series, we return to Wichita to cover the final set of Dennis Rader’s horrifying crimes—and the unraveling cracks in his double life. This episode picks up after the murder of Nancy Fox and carries us through the devastating story of Maureen Hedge, the rise of public awareness about BTK, and how close law enforcement almost came to stopping him in the 1970s.

⚠️ Content Warning: This episode contains graphic discussions of murder, sexual assault, grief, and abuse. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

    This is the one where:

    • Gen explains the infamous phone call Dennis made after Nancy's murder—and the random off-duty firefighter who almost blew the case wide open.
    • Kait walks you through how BTK used a Cub Scout camping trip as a cover to kill his neighbor, Maureen Hedge.
    • You learn how a tacky, awful poem almost made it into a Valentine's Day classified ad section.
    • The Wichita Police Department finally goes public with the serial killer theory—and BTK's ego explodes.

It's brutal, it's dark, and it's frustrating as hell. But you also get:

    • The grief and aftermath from Nancy's family
    • Kerri Rader's eerily accurate night terrors
    • Kait's theory on why Dennis should have been shot into a toilet at birth

All of this while he was a Cub Scout leader. A deacon. A father. A f*cking fraud.

Next week wraps the series with the real star: Kerri Rawson, his daughter, and a survivor in her own right.

  • EP 90: "Terror in Wichita" — The Story of 'Bind-Torture-Kill' Killer Dennis Rader (Part III)
    May 30 2025

Dennis Rader is back (ugh), and Part III picks up right where we left off in 1977: with a monster hiding in plain sight. In this episode, we dive into Dennis's bizarre mix of obsessive murder-planning (then abrupt & outrageous spontaneousness), the murders of Shirley Vian and Nancy Fox & cops finally starting to realize their is a serial killer amongst them, and Dennis getting a WHOLE lot bolder in his game of cat and mouse with police.

    This is the one where:

    • Dennis gets annoyed that 3 randos in prison try to take "credit" for the Otero murders so he leaves a letter for the newspaper in a library book
    • Dennis commits his 7th and 8th murders (of single mother Shirley Vian and 25 year old secretary Nancy Fox)
    • Once again Dennis gets annoyed that the police don't find one of his murders fast enough so he literally CALLS the cops about it.
    • Dennis's heart falls out of his butt when his wife Paula goes "wow that sounds just like you" to his 911 call about a murder playing on the news

⚠️ Content Warning: This episode contains graphic descriptions of violence, sexual assault, and mentions of self-harm. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

  • EP 88 AUDIOBOOK: Gen Reads Agatha Christie's "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" (Chapters 21-23)
    May 16 2025

We’re nearing the final stretch of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie—and whew, things are getting juicy. Chapter 21 serves tea hotter than Caroline’s pre-sleuthing pot and spills just as fast.

In this installment, Poirot drops some bombs: secret marriages, summerhouse brawls, and an identity twist that nobody saw coming. Caroline’s meddling reaches new levels, we meet a new suspect (or two), and Hercule finally reveals what that dictaphone was really doing in Ackroyd’s study.

And just when you think the timeline is clear… BAM. Ralph Peyton walks in like a soap opera cliffhanger.

⚠️ Content Warning: This episode includes mentions of murder, emotional manipulation, and gaslighting in romantic relationships. Nothing graphic, but Poirot’s side-eye might sting.

  • EP 86: "Terror in Wichita" — The Story of 'Bind-Torture-Kill' Killer Dennis Rader (Part II)
    May 2 2025

    Episode Summary

The nightmare continues. In Part II of our BTK series, Gen and Kait pick up where they left off — with Wichita police frantically investigating the Otero family murders and Dennis Rader settling disturbingly well into a normal suburban life. While detectives pursued leads from Panama to coworkers at the Colman factory, the real killer was quietly installing home security systems across the city... many of which were purchased in fear of his own crimes.

This episode covers the chilling lead-up to Dennis Rader’s next brutal attack — the calculated and tragic assault on 21-year-old Kathy Bright and her younger brother Kevin. From Rader’s internal monologue and disturbing writings to Kevin’s harrowing survival and eyewitness account, Episode 86 dives deeper into the psychology of a killer who saw himself not as a man, but as a project planner with victims as his assignments.

Through firsthand survivor reports, deep research, and unfiltered reactions, Gen and Kait take listeners step by step through the day Dennis returned to 13th Street... and how Kevin’s resilience helped shape one of the earliest composites of BTK.

⚠️ Content Warning: This episode contains graphic descriptions of violence, home invasion, and crimes against women. Listener discretion is advised.

  • EP 85: "Terror in Wichita" — The Story of 'Bind-Torture-Kill' Killer Dennis Rader (Part I)
    Apr 25 2025

EP 85: "Terror in Wichita" — The Story of 'Bind-Torture-Kill' Killer Dennis Rader (Part I)

    Episode Summary

In this gripping two-part series, we pull back the curtain on the chilling dual life of Dennis Rader — known to the world as the BTK Killer. From his disturbingly ordinary upbringing to the cold, calculated murders that paralyzed Wichita for decades, Episode 85 of Camping Is Canceled is a deep dive into the mind of a man who lived two lives: family man by day, monster by night.

The episode opens with a firsthand account from Kerri Rawson — Dennis Rader’s daughter — who recounts the moment she discovered her father was the notorious serial killer who’d haunted her hometown and her nightmares. We then take listeners through the tragic, horrifying events of January 15, 1974, when the Otero family was brutally murdered in their own home. As we peel back each layer of Rader’s early years and mounting psychological obsessions, it becomes clear how someone so outwardly ordinary could orchestrate acts of pure evil.

Listeners will also hear the story of Kathy and Kevin Bright — a second attack just months later that nearly claimed two more lives — and how the psychological profile of BTK began to take shape in law enforcement circles.

⚠️ Content Warning: This episode contains graphic descriptions of violence, sexual assault, and crimes against children. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

    Apr 4 2025

See Episodes 47-49 for Chapters 1-7

In the spring of 1926, a murder captured the public eye, and a book about it would go on to sell millions of copies worldwide. That book was The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, the crime novel written by Agatha Christie.

Agatha Christie was born in 1890, and eventually became (and remains) the best selling novelist of all time (whaaaat?!). She wrote 66 detective novels and 14 collections of short stories, and her writings have inspired countless plays, movies, and TV shows. She defined the crime fiction genre like no other author ever has.

Today, we're going to bring you the pleasure of one of her most famous detective novels, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Fortunately for us, this novel just entered public domain, and over the next few episodes, we'll be bringing you a handful of chapters each week until we've finished the novel, and you'll have to tell us what you think.

Don't worry, we'll be back to true stories of horrible stuff very soon. And in the meantime, settle back and let yourself be transported to the 1920s to the small English village of King's Abbot. There's going to be a murder. Lights out, campers.
