  • Israel to reopen Gaza’s Rafah crossing after search for captive’s body ends
    Jan 26 2026
Israel says it will reopen Gaza's southern Rafah crossing when the search for the body of the last Israeli captive held in Gaza is completed. The crossing with Egypt was scheduled to reopen this week as part of the US brokered ceasefire agreement. Israel says the border crossing will open under full Israeli oversight and for the movement of people only. The statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office comes on the day top US officials visited Israel to facilitate more humanitarian aid into Gaza. Antony Loewenstein is an independent journalist and author of “The Palestine Laboratory”, a book on the Israeli arms and surveillance industry. He says even if the crossing reopens, it is unlikely that Palestinians will be allowed to move freely both ways. • Killing of Alex Pretti by ICE agents in Minneapolis demands full investigation: Analysis
    Jan 25 2026
In an Al Jazeera interview, legal scholar Claire Finkelstein says the killing of Alex Pretti by ICE agents raises serious questions about gun rights and the use of force. She notes Pretti legally owned and carried the gun under Minnesota law, which is constitutional under Supreme Court precedent. Finkelstein says a key issue is that Pretti had reportedly been disarmed before he was shot. It remains unclear whether the officer who fired knew the weapon had been taken. She argues this uncertainty makes a full investigation essential. Finkelstein says the case exposes a constitutional dilemma for conservatives and gun lobbyists. She warns that exercising Second Amendment rights may place civilians at grave risk. • US climber Alex Honnold scales Taipei 101 skyscraper in free solo climb
    Jan 25 2026
Alex Honnold has become the first person to free solo climb Taipei 101, scaling the 508-metre skyscraper without ropes or a harness in just over 90 minutes. The ascent, the highest free solo climb of an urban structure in history, was streamed live on Netflix with a 10-second delay. Thousands gathered in Taiwan's capital to watch, whilst critics labelled the event voyeuristic and irresponsible given Honnold is a father of two. The 40-year-old climber, who rose to fame after conquering Yosemite's El Capitan in the 2018 documentary Free Solo, trained for three months ahead of the attempt. Al Jazeera's David Stokes reports. • Mexico slaps 50 percent tariffs on China: Trade protection or US pressure?
    Jan 25 2026
Mexico has imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on Chinese products, a move welcomed by domestic manufacturers such as shoe producers in Leon who have long struggled against cheaper Chinese competition. Whilst the Mexican government says the measures aim to protect 350,000 jobs and strengthen the national economy, analysts suggest the decision reflects pressure from the United States, which fears Mexico serves as a backdoor for Chinese goods into the North American Free Trade Zone. China has criticised the tariffs, warning they will harm all parties, whilst consumers in Mexico are likely to face rising costs on popular Chinese imports including electric vehicles. • Israel seizes historic Sebastia site in largest West Bank land grab since 1967
    Jan 25 2026
Israel has issued its largest archaeological site confiscation order in the occupied West Bank since 1967, seizing 1.8sq km in Sebastia. The Israeli Antiquities minister claims the land has Jewish heritage and plans to turn it into a national park, calling it "correcting injustice". Palestinians say the privately owned land is part of Israel's de-facto annexation of the West Bank and an attempt to reshape the narrative around their history. Sebastia, believed to be the burial site of John the Baptist, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the territory. Al Jazeera's Nida Ibrahim reports from Sebastia, occupied West Bank.
