To Serve and Betray | The Sandra Birchmore Case: United States v Matthew Farwell

When 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore was found dead inside her Massachusetts apartment in February 2021, investigators initially ruled her death a suicide. But Sandra was pregnant, excited about becoming a mother, and making plans for her future. Her family believed there was more to the story.

What followed would expose disturbing allegations involving multiple officers from the Stoughton Police Department, including a detective Sandra had known since she was just 12 years old.

More than three years after her death, former detective Matthew Farwell was arrested and charged with killing Sandra and causing the death of her unborn child.

Now, as his federal trial unfolds, jurors are hearing explosive testimony about secret relationships, thousands of private messages, alleged grooming and sexual abuse, and the evidence prosecutors say proves Sandra was murdered.

In this episode of 13th Juror Podcast, we're breaking down Sandra's story, the investigation that initially classified her death as a suicide, and the testimony from the first two weeks of Matthew Farwell's trial.

Was Sandra's death a suicide, as the defense maintains? Or did someone go to extraordinary lengths to make a murder look like one?

  • Bonus Episode: Inside the Cornell Chi Phi Case
    Oct 1 2026

This week, we’re bringing you a bonus episode because this case is simply too big—and there are too many unanswered questions—to fit into Court Report.

Seven men who were Cornell students and members of the Chi Phi fraternity at the time are accused in a civil lawsuit of sexually assaulting a fellow student after a night involving alcohol and ketamine. Disturbing Snapchat messages circulated while she was allegedly inside the fraternity house. She later went to police, but no criminal charges were filed.

Now, nearly two years later, a lawsuit and new reporting from CBS News are raising serious questions about what Jane Doe told investigators, what was ultimately documented, and what information prosecutors actually received when they decided not to pursue charges.

In this episode, we go back to the beginning: what Jane says happened that night, what she told police afterward, the evidence that has since emerged, why the original investigation ended without charges, and why the case is now being examined again.

This episode discusses allegations of sexual assault and drug use and may not be appropriate for all listeners.

The allegations discussed in this episode have not been proven in court. The individuals named in the civil lawsuit are entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence in any criminal proceeding.

  • The Doctor & The Lawyer: FL v Tomasz Kosowski
    Sep 30 2026

Attorney Steven Cozzi arrived at work on an ordinary Tuesday morning—and then seemingly vanished. His car was still outside. His phone, wallet, and keys were left behind. But inside the office building, investigators found blood, signs of a cleanup, and surveillance footage of a mysterious man leaving with a heavily loaded wagon.

What followed was an investigation that would uncover a contentious lawsuit, months of alleged planning, a hidden Toyota Tundra, disturbing digital evidence, and a trail that investigators believed revealed what happened to Steve—even though his body has never been found.

More than three years later, plastic surgeon Dr. Tomasz Kosowski went on trial for Steve's murder. But with no body, no jury, and Kosowski making the extraordinary decision to represent himself in a death penalty case, prosecutors would have to prove their case in one of the most unusual murder trials we've covered.

This is the case of Steven Cozzi and the trial of Dr. Tomasz Kosowski.
