In the summer between second and third year at Whitehall, Emily accompanies Lady Barb on her rounds of the Cairngorm Mountains, bringing magical help to the locals and searching for new magicians. For Emily, tired and broken after the events of Study in Slaughter, it should be a chance to relax as well as to visit a new part of the Nameless World, to put her responsibilities aside and just be herself.
But the locals aren't quite what she expects, with problems of their own, and Lady Barb is a different person away from Whitehall. As children start to go missing and evil things are abroad in the night, Emily discovers that a deadly plot is slowly bringing the mountain community to the brink of disaster and that her oldest enemies are about to make a very unwelcome return.

Minor Spoiler: #overpowered magic
It's official: the main character is capable of nuking an area while capable of escaping it, after significant fighting and being exhausted. The main character barely had 2 years of magic school and 12 years of general education, nothing sugessts that she really understands nuclear weapons to a high level.
This being so theoretically accessible predetermines the end of the world to a time, where more people get a hold of such concepts. Atomic weapons that can be used "easily" after basic magic education by any mage who has the spell is problematic in the longterm, but also makes the main character overpowered in the present, which wasn't the case before.
Many magic-stories sooner or later make either power creep, timetravel, time stop, or future sight abilities completely destabelizing the whole system for the nice moment. Here it is power creep. I still enjoy it, but it's hard to not see the consequences of overusing otherworldly knowledge in such a story.
The bookseries starting with "oathbound healer" is a good example of reincarnation/summon/isekai where there are reasonable limits to the main characters knowledge and in result abilies. Many others go too far at some point, like here.
