Über diesen Titel
“A remarkable work that will stand at the forefront of the neurodiversity movement.”—Barry M. Prizant, PhD, CCC-SLP, author of Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism
For every visibly Autistic person you meet, there are countless “masked” Autistic people who pass as neurotypical. Masking is a common coping mechanism in which Autistic people hide their identifiably Autistic traits in order to fit in with societal norms, adopting a superficial personality at the expense of their mental health. This can include suppressing harmless stims, papering over communication challenges by presenting as unassuming and mild-mannered, and forcing themselves into situations that cause severe anxiety, all so they aren’t seen as needy or “odd.”
In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares his personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain. Most masked Autistic individuals struggle for decades before discovering who they truly are. They are also more likely to be marginalized in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other factors, which contributes to their suffering and invisibility. Dr. Price lays the groundwork for unmasking and offers exercises that encourage self-expression, including:
• Celebrating special interests
• Cultivating Autistic relationships
• Reframing Autistic stereotypes
• And rediscovering your values
It’s time to honor the needs, diversity, and unique strengths of Autistic people so that they no longer have to mask—and it’s time for greater public acceptance and accommodation of difference. In embracing neurodiversity, we can all reap the rewards of nonconformity and learn to live authentically, Autistic and neurotypical people alike.

Kritikerstimmen
“Reading this felt like being at home—I didn’t realize how much I masked. What an incredible book that I know will be re-read many times over.”—Dr. Camilla Pang, author of An Outsider’s Guide to Humans
“Price’s accessible and compassionate writing shines, and readers will feel encouraged to embrace a new understanding of themselves. Its potential to help masked autistic adults, especially those from systemically marginalized backgrounds, makes this book essential for most collections.”—Library Journal, starred review
Big recommendation for any Autistic person struggeling with their self-worth and self-image, or anyone wanting to better understand this complex neurotype.
All I hoped for and more

NOT a science/education book on diagnostic criteria or brain development.
It’s more about how to find your way as an autistic person and… unmask. And for that, the book is just p e r f e c t !
Inspirational

Devon paints an interesting picture of how diverse not just the autistic community is but also their various experiences, and how not just autistic individuals suffer from social prejudice towards us. There's a decent amount of mentions of marginalised autistics and their experiences, like POC or LGBT individuals, or those with other disabilities than autism, which in some cases were important to add to our frame of reference as we may not live similar experiences and thus aren't as likely to be able to sympathise, and in other cases I felt recognition, especially with those in relation to being trans. There's a higher percentage of trans people among autistics than neurotypicals and so I'm of the opinion it's important were are also aware of those experiences and how they may affect another.
While I enjoyed the book and how it included the experiences of various individuals, I did struggle a lot with telling where in the book I was/what the chapter was about as a lot of what was being said felt repeated. Perhaps that's simply because my mind does better with these topics or writing styles in writing than in an audio format, and with the relatively short duration, I might consider giving it another listen.
Nice listen

Finally someone who analyses the broad palette of Autism and the influence of different external factors on visibility of traids. Finally we can take a step beyond "you have Autism when a, b, c" or "you can't have autism because you are (not) x, y, z"
multi facette view on Autism

It goes deep on important issues. And that is written by an autist makes it really relatable.
Good and important book on autism

The book is brilliantly written to help readers understand and begin to remove their masks, with exercises to help you understand yourself better. It addresses internalised ableism and has helped me reframe my definition of disability. The book guides the reader to identify and live by their core values. It is valuable for anyone seeking to become a more authentic self.
Subjective notes:
- I really enjoyed the pace and tone of the reading.
- some social observations might differ for people not living in the USA
- how to get a diagnosis and the excess to professional help might also differ compared to the USA
- the book has mainly recommendations of helping groups within the USA
-> nonetheless, it helps to get an idea what to look for in your own search of communities and help
