From CWA Gold Dagger winner Mick Herron comes a shocking, twisted novel of psychological suspense about one woman's attempt to be better than ordinary.
A lot of things have happened.
If she could turn back time, she wondered how far she would go.
Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Barnes is someone you would never look at twice. Living alone in a month-to-month sublet in the huge city of London, with no family but an estranged sister, no boyfriend or partner, and not much in the way of friends, Maggie is just the kind of person who could vanish from the face of the earth without anyone taking notice.
Or just the kind of person MI5 needs to infiltrate the establishment and thwart an international plot that puts all of Britain at risk.
Now one young woman has the chance to be a hero - if she can think quickly enough to stay alive.

Not your typical Herron
A truly interesting idea and well developed story, especially with the different perspectives the parts that are told through the eyes of the main characters add. While not a typical Herron in my book (in light of the role the security services play), I very much enjoyed this book.
But I was a bit disappointed how quickly the end of the story came about. While perhaps a function of the overall brevity of the book (relatively short playtime), it almost seems as if the author lost faith in his story and his ability to spin it for a little while longer. Given how high my expectations are towards a Herron, that was a bit underwhelming – especially considering that it seems easy to see that more suspense and intrigue might not be difficult to add at the end.
Nonetheless quite entertaining and brilliantly read by Imogen Church.
