The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth rates, mass immigration, and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive alteration as a society and an eventual end.
This is not just an analysis of demographic and political realities; it is also an eyewitness account of a continent in self-destruct mode. It includes accounts based on travels across the entire continent, from the places where migrants land to the places they end up, from the people who pretend they want them to the places which cannot accept them.
Murray takes a step back at each stage and looks at the bigger and deeper issues which lie behind a continent's possible demise, from an atmosphere of mass terror attacks to the steady erosion of our freedoms. The audiobook addresses the disappointing failure of multiculturalism, Angela Merkel's U-turn on migration, the lack of repatriation, and the Western fixation on guilt. Murray travels to Berlin, Paris, Scandinavia, Lampedusa, and Greece to uncover the malaise at the very heart of the European culture and to hear the stories of those who have arrived in Europe from far away.
This sharp and incisive audiobook ends up with two visions for a new Europe - one hopeful, one pessimistic - which paint a picture of Europe in crisis and offer a choice as to what, if anything, we can do next. But perhaps Spengler was right: 'civilizations, like humans, are born, briefly flourish, decay, and die'.

We all can see it. This is the last wake-up call.
Very well written, self-reflecting chronic of our demise. Though being reminded of our imbecile politicians can cause anger and depression to reoccur.

Want to know, where we Europeans are going?
Very impressive summary of european history, latest events in the present age and almost inevitable gloomy end of an era of prosperity in Europe. I always compare the present situation in Europe with 1910 and am sure, that the Europe of 2040 will be a complete different one. We experience history in progress and I do not envy the generation following us

Very sobering perspectives
Shows us how Europe came to its current state. Portrays the “zeitgeist” where anyone speaking out against immigration, as it is executed in Europe, as racist, nazi etc...Very interesting and sobering/worrying subject

sehr lesenswert
Sehr wichtiges Buch! Sehr gute Analyse der gescheiterten Einwanderungspolitik in Westeuropa nach dem zweite Weltkrieg und insbesondere der letzten Jahren.

Fact based, thoughtful and with much empathy
...towards refugees. The author visited refugee camps, talked to politicians and all manner of people all over Europe. The resulting book is both immediately relevant and takes a long term perspective about the future of Europe.

Finally a very balanced outlook
I don't understand the people that call this one-sided at all to be honest. Murray has an opinion, yes, but he dives into this topic in absolutely massive detail, answering almost all pro-migration arguments and deliberately keeping his con-arguments super rational (most of the time he just lists events, statistics and numbers without a damning value judgement). He shows and very explicitly mentions the humanitarian dilemma this entire story entails while still being able to distinctly wall the humanitarian aspect off of wishful thinking and naive world-savior fantasies. This is the book you want to read if you want to hear a very rational counter-argument against migration. Which is something people who didn't stop after the first chapter to write a review would have found in this book.
The speaker had a very soothing, clear and great voice, but his accent immitations when he was quoting someone from Africa, Spain or France was just too much. That really takes you out of it.

Essential
There is a wall of silence surrounding this topic. Even if some may disagree with the content of this book, which is well-researched and full of facts and dates, for the reason of alone, it is essential to read (or rather listen to it).
