This book had me so excited to delve into, the theme is right up my alley as I really like history and WW2 stories and I have read or listened to other Erik Larson books such as Dead Wake, In the Garden of Beasts and Devil in the White City and I really enjoyed them all (with Devil being his best in my opinion). So I was disappointed that this book with all of its promise of excitement and larger than life characters fell flat for me. It ended up being a slog to get through. The story is okay with occasional interesting moments but there were too many plodding, poorly paced and not so interesting sections. I found that I started to lose interest or found myself distracted on multiple occasions while driving home from work while listening to this book. The narrator was good and I didn't find the book to be bad per se, just not at all riveting. I like everything else I have read from Erik Larson so I am not going to let this keep me from continuing to follow his work, but this book for me was his weakest that I have read.

For Larson a first miss for me.
