My German Review: ... sei gewarnt. Das Buch unterscheidet sich in vielen wichtigen Punkten vom Film, vor allem was die Struktur und Nebenhandlungen angeht. Die Figur des neuen Papstes ist weit weniger zögernd als Anthony Quinns Darstellung und die Geschichte selbst ist lediglich der Rahmen für die inneren Zwiespalte eines Papstes, der seinen Weg finden will. Dies ist natürlich interessant, doch die Nebenhandlungen neben gut die Hälfte des Romans ein. Wer fand, dass die Handlung um den Reporter, seine Frau und seine Geliebte im Film schon zu viel Platz einnahm, wird sich hier wohl die Haare raufen.
Alles in allem jedoch ein interessanter Einblick in das Pontifikat aus der Sicht eines Romanautors, aber im direkten Vergleich ist der Film besser.
Zum Sprecher sei noch gesagt, dass man ihn zwar deutlich versteht, doch es hat den Anschein, als hätte man hier und da (manchmal mitten in einem Satz) eine neue, bessere Aufnahme eingefügt.

My English Review: If you want to hear the book because of the movie... be warned. The book differs from the film in many important ways, most notably the structure and subplots. The character of the new pope is far less hesitant than Anthony Quinn's portrayal, and the story itself merely frames the inner conflicts of a pope trying to find his way. This is of course interesting, but the subplots alongside enter a good half of the novel. Anyone who thought that the plot about the reporter, his wife and his lover took up too much space in the film will probably tear their hairs out.
All in all, however, an interesting look at the pontificate from a novelist's point of view, but in direct comparison, the film is better.
As for the narrator, while you can hear him clearly, it seems like a new, better recording has been added here and there (sometimes in the middle of a sentence).
